A short flight from Lima or Cusco brings you to the jungle town of Iquitos. This is the heart of the Amazon and the headwaters of the greatest ecological zone on earth. A motor boat takes you 25 miles downstream to the Ceiba Tops Lodge, a beautiful sanctuary with air conditioned cabins, hot water showers, and a relaxing pool and waterslide! A local guide shares some of the secrets of this ecological treasure as you look for monkeys, tapirs, capybara, macaws, toucans and more. At night, enjoy cool drinks while listening to howler monkeys in the canopy.

Arrive at the Iquitos airport and meet the friendly staff from Ceiba Tops Lodge. After driving through the town of Iquitos, arrive at the main dock. A twenty-five mile journey down the Amazon River by motorized boat brings you to the lodge, where private rooms with air conditioning and hot water provide all of the comforts of home. Enjoy an afternoon hike in the beautiful primary rainforest reserve surrounding Ceiba Tops, where you can see enormous trees festooned with epiphytes. After dinner, enjoy local flute and guitar music at the El Toucan Bar or chat with the guides about the legends and history of the Amazon forest.
This morning visit a local indigenous village where your guide will explain the Yagua Indian culture and how it was affected by the arrival of Europeans and the passing of time. On your way to the village, look out for pink dolphins in the Amazon River! Peruse the local handicrafts and textiles and enjoy a demonstration of the Yagua blowgun, which some in the village still use for hunting.
In the afternoon, walk to the neighboring town of Indiana. Originally a Franciscan Mission, Indiana has grown into a large river community with its own market, high school and small hospital.
Early this morning depart from Ceiba Tops by boat to the ExplorNapo Lodge for breakfast. Hike the spectacular Canopy Walkway spanning over 500 meters (one-third of a mile), connected by tree platforms and reaching a height of over 115 feet. It is accessible without any type of climbing skill or equipment. After lunch, visit the "ReNuPeRu" Ethnobotanical Garden where over 240 medicinal plants are cultivated by a local shaman who will explain Amazonian holistic healing and the uses of the native plants. Return to Ceiba Tops in time to enjoy the pool or hammocks before dinner.
Day 4 Return to Iquitos
This morning choose between a hike or a boating excursion to further enjoy the rainforest and the Amazon River. You can also choose to relax by the pool until departure time. Return to Iquitos this afternoon for your flight back to Lima.
The trip might have been the absolute best of our lifetime (thus far). We particularly want to commend our guide Peter in the Guilin area-he was so incredibly attentive, energetic, enthusiastic-and absolutely dedicated to ensuring that our meals were 100% vegetarian.
