Perched on the far southern tip of Uruguay, Montevideo is a white city, and one of the loveliest capital cities of South America. Come and admire the beautiful historical remains dating from Spanish rule; find the most interesting within the Cuidad Vieja - formerly fortified, its old town dates from the 18th century. The best preserved are the cathedral and the former governmental palace of the Cabildo, both listed historical monuments. In the crook of a vast blue bay, the city is also blessed with beautiful beaches.
The small port town of Camarones features incredible surroundings. The sea, the mountain range, and the panoramic views lure tourists year round to come to this beautiful town and enjoy its streets and its picturesque houses. The area is rich with wildlilfe: fox, rheas, Patagonian hares, guanacos, and skunks on solid ground; sea lions, Commersons’ dolphins, and penguins in the water - they all embody some of the wildlife specimens that may be watched around Camarones.
As you reach the Falkland Islands, first visit Saunders Island, which offers unique up-close opportunities to see diverse wildlife, as well as wonderful hiking opportunities. Besides wildlife, Saunders is also historically significant as it is the original British settlement (23 January 1765), and is home to many working sheep farms.
Originally named Albatross Island, West Point Island is located off the northwest tip of West Falkland and is home to black-browed albatross, amongst other birds. The terrain is varied, consisting of dramatic sandstone cliffs, falling away to low lying areas of emerald greens. The highest point, Cliff Mountain, is 381m (1,211 feet), the highest cliff in the Falklands. It is an Important Bird Area, and alongside the albatross are Rockhopper penguins and Imperial Cormorants. Many other species can be seen. Whales, fur seals, sea lions, and dolphins are also frequently observed.
A group of islands lie at the southern entrance to Falkland Sound, the channel of water dividing East and West Falkland. The land is low-lying with several ponds and many sheltered, sandy coves. Walking on each of the islands is easy due to the flat terrain. Around forty two species of birds can be seen in the islands along with marine mammals.
Barren Island supports a large colony of juvenile sea lions and easily accessible sites to view southern giant petrels. It is a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers with visitors able to tick off around thirty two species of birds.
This mythic island, one of the northernmost of the South Shetland Islands, served as a refuge for part of the crew of Shackleton's Endurance expedition. From there, the James Caird, a rescue boat from the Endurance, embarked on the perilous journey to South Georgia to rescue the men left behind. All survived despite the inhospitable nature of the island. Indeed, Elephant Island's steep, ice-covered mountainsides bear no trace of man. Yet these rough conditions haven't deterred a colony of chinstrap penguins from settling at Point Wild or gentoo penguins and elephant seals from taking shelter at Cape Lookout.
Amidst the eerie stillness of the Weddell Sea, wind your way through a veritable labyrinth of majestic table icebergs. Sweeping ice platforms sculpt a landscape unlike any other, populated by fur seals, penguins, wandering albatross, and other imposing seabirds. The Weddell seal, king of this realm, welcomes you to his territory with a haunting cry that pierces the surrounding silence. Recognize him by his dark gray coat and spotted belly. Weddell seals have the impressive distinction of being able to stay underwater for more than an hour.
Cuverville is a dark, rocky island lying in Errera Channel between Arctowski Peninsula and the northern part of Rongé Island, off the west coast of Graham Land in Antarctica. Here you visit a breeding colony of about 6500 pairs of gentoo penguins, the largest for this species on the Antarctic Peninsula. Other birds nesting at the site include southern giant petrels and imperial shags.
The back of Cierva Cove is a massive glacial face, which regularly calves ice into the bay. This spot is one of the best Zodiac cruising locations along the Northern part of the Antarctic Peninsula, specifically for the glacial face and icebergs and brash ice that collects in the bay. Cierva Cove has some of the densest grass, moss, and lichen cover of any site on the peninsula.
Nestled at the heart of the South Shetland Islands, Deception Island is easy to recognize for its horseshoe shape. This island was once an active volcano whose crater collapsed some 10,000 years ago. This produced a caldera which was then flooded by the sea, creating a natural port. Entrance to the port is via a narrow channel called Neptune’s Bellows. For a long time this was an important whaling station and the intensity of this activity has left traces that have withstood the passage of time. On the black sand of the volcanic beaches lie the ruins of abandoned huts, and the place is teeming today with extraordinary wildlife. Excursions aboard Zodiac® dinghies allow you to set foot on this expanse of land where more than 100,000 pairs of chinstrap penguins, elephant seals, and fur seals live side by side.
Half Moon Island is one of the most beautiful sites in the South Shetlands. Sharp craggy slabs of rock covered in brilliant orange, yellow, and black lichens provide nesting sites for chinstrap penguins that have some of the best views around. A large, active chinstrap penguin colony (over 3,000 breeding pairs) is the main attraction, and there is an Antarctic cormorant colony on the southern tip of the island. Antarctic terns, kelp gulls, snowy sheathbills and usually a few Weddell seals are also usually found on shore. Nesting skuas make themselves known to those who cross over into their territory. Later in the season, Antarctic fur seals and southern elephant seals haul out and rest on the beaches.

Beyond expectations! Then again we weren't sure what to expect. Lovely stay at the lodge, met other like-minded travelers (many had their trips planned by Adventure Life) and the owner was a gracious hostess. It felt like you were one happy family, visiting with a favorite aunt.

The response from Adventure Life to my first inquiry was prompt and promising. I worked with Jamie Broeckel, Trip Planner, via text, email, and phone calls- always extremely responsive and thorough with information and explaining the process to arrange a private tour for me to Malaysia Borneo. Within about week, the booking was complete and I made decisions because of Jamie's great customer service , friendly manner, and overall competence on behalf of the company's travel expertise. Now I have an itinerary, additional Trip Planner Assistants, several links for vital information for traveling to Maylasia, etc. Still many details for Sept. trip, but now the heavy lifting is done and I can enjoy the rest of the anticipation and research!! Thanks Jamie- you are amazing!!!!

The trip was not only memorable for the amount of animals we saw but also for the people and accommodations at the two camps where we stayed. Our first guide, BK, was a wealth of information about the animals, landscape and down to the plants and what they were used for. Everyday out was a learning experience with him. All the people at the camps were gracious and the food was excellent.
Our second camp in the Okavanga was just as good as the first as far as the staff, accommodations, food and animals. After our experience at the first camp we amazed that the high quality remained the same. Our guide, G, made sure we were able to enjoy every experience including a rush through the bush to witness a cheetah and an ensuing hunt that he heard over his radio.
In both camps there were enough guides out that if they saw something the other guides were informed which helped in seeing as much as possible. It was also nice that the concessions were large enough that we did not have vehicles following each other throughout the day.
Normally there is always something in a trip of this length that we think could be improved upon but this is the rare case where we cannot think of anything. From the time we left the States to when we returned it was one of the most hassle free vacations we took.
Perhaps emphasizing the use of the laundry facilities at the camps would be useful because of the luggage restrictions would be the only thing I can think of as an improvement to future clients.
