Day 1 Arrive in Ushuaia, Argentina

Arrive at Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world. Upon your arrival at the airport a transfer is provided to your hotel, which has been pre-arranged and is included in the price of the voyage.  Visit the Argentinean leather markets and succulent lamb dishes that make Patagonia famous as you explore the southernmost town in the world. Highlights of Ushuaia include an award-winning museum and trips to nearby Tierra del Fuego National Park and its popular “Train at the End of the World.”

Day 2 Embarkation in Ushuaia

  • Ship
  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
In the afternoon a group transfer is provided to the pier where you are welcomed aboard the luxury expedition ship M/V Sea Spirit. Explore the ship and get comfortable in your home away from home for the extraordinary adventure to come. Savor the anticipation of your Antarctic dreams coming true as the ship slips its moorings and sails toward a true wilderness where wildlife abounds. The scenery as you sail through the Beagle Channel on your first evening is wonderful and there is already the possibility of marine mammal encounters.

Day 3-4 Crossing the Drake Passage

  • Ship
  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
After transiting the Beagle Channel and passing the islands of Tierra del Fuego, head south across the Drake Passage. Pelagic seabirds including the majestic albatross are common in these waters and can readily be viewed from panoramic open decks or from exterior stateroom windows and balconies. On the way cross the Antarctic Convergence, the biological boundary of the Southern Ocean. The ship’s stabilizing fins provide comfort in the event of rough seas. Briefings, orientations, and lectures from expert staff prepare you for your arrival in Antarctica.

Day 5-10 South Shetland Islands and the Antarctic Peninsula

  • Ship
  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
The land of superlatives: Antarctica! The Expedition Leader and Captain create a flexible itinerary based on weather, ice, and opportunity. The route you take highlights the most scenic bays and channels of the Peninsula with stops at penguin rookeries, seal wallows, bird colonies and whale feeding areas as well as sites of historic and scientific interest. The trip may include picturesque Neko Harbor, sheltered Paradise Harbor, the humpback whale favored Wilhelmina Bay, the striking Lemaire Channel, the wildlife-filled Penola Channel, or the majestic Neumayer Channel. You may make a stop at an active scientific base such as Poland’s Arctowksi or Ukraine’s Vernadskiy as well as an historic base such as U.K.’s Port Lockroy or Wordie House.

All the while, Adelie, chinstrap and gentoo penguins abound, and Weddell, crabeater and elephant seals are often found hauled out to rest along with predatory leopard seals and the aggressive Antarctic fur seal. Minke and humpback whales are frequent visitors in the late season and orca sightings are also common.

Day 11-12 Back across the Drake Passage

  • Ship
  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
After your amazing time in Antarctica cross back north through the bountiful waters of the Drake Passage. Presentations and workshops by expert staff, as well as a range of onboard recreation facilities, ensure that these days at sea are not idly spent. This is also the time for End of Voyage ceremonies, including a slideshow and farewell dinner.

Day 13 Disembark in Ushuaia, Argentina

  • 1 Breakfast
After breakfast say farewell in the city of Ushuaia, where you started. A group transfer is provided to the airport or to the town center if you wish to spend more time here. As you look back on your wonderful experience in Antarctica, you may already be looking forward to your next incredible adventure to the ice!
