While living in Peru in 2007, my wife and I did a number of treks. Only one was with a local guide and it was my favorite. We trekked in Colca Canyon in Southern Peru for a week with a guide who had grown up in the canyon. Not only was he able to introduce us to the flora, he was also able to "break the ice" with the local folks whose first language is Quechua. Conversing in Spanish, during the week, he taught us a few phrases in Quechua and we taught him a few in English. A wonderful experience. Bill
