Bolivia Ancient Cultures- amazing!
Protecting La Paz
Bolivia is a jewel! This trip was incredible. The landscape and the people there are without a doubt some of the most memorable I have encountered.
Arrive in La Paz
We arrived in La Paz early in the morning, which gave us a beautiful sunrise view of the city as we were driven down from the airport. Our wonderful guide Grace met us at the airport, and showed us to the Hotel Rey Palace. After resting up and acclimatizing for a couple of hours, it was time to see a little of the city. We sampled El Ceibo …
Today we toured the Tiahuanaco ruins, about an hour and a half from La Paz. These ruins pre-date the Incas, and could not look more different from those in Machu Picchu. They are set on a high plain (beautiful!), but much of the site remains underground. Some highlights were a large carved stone statue of the god Pachamama, a basin used to …
La Paz is an incredible, bustling city, with some of the best people-watching (and dog-watching, if you are like me) ever. I could have sat on a bench for hours doing just that- and believe me after walking around all day my feet wished I had! It was a great day though- we stocked up on more chocolate, bought souvenirs, and visited the folklore …
Isle del Sol
Best vacation ever! Today was incredible! We arrived at Isle del Sol in Lake Titicaca. We traveled to Copacabana, then took a 1.5 hour boat ride to the island, which may be the prettiest place on Earth. We hiked an hour from the shore up to our eco lodge, passing pre-Incan ruins, farmland, burros, and llamas on the way. The view of …
Isle del Sol and Moon Island
We took a boat to the north end of Isle del Sol and hiked to Challapampa. We explored more ruins, including the sacred rock of Lake Titicaca and the footprints left by the Sun God when he left the island! We spent some time on the beach and waded in the lake. We then went by boat back to the southern end of the island where we enjoyed an aptapi, …
Copacabana then home!
We spent the morning exploring the incredible peaks overlooking the harbor at Copacabana. It was quite a hike, but afforded a beautiful view of the town of Copacabana and the lake. We also got to watch a celebration for Saint Francisco, which included fireworks, dancing, and a procession including this little girl riding on top of a car! Then …
