Adventure Life is proud to partner with The Lost Girls and Village Volunteers on the Runaway Bridesmaids Fundraiser to help fight sex trafficking.
The Lost Girls are gathering a team of 100 men and women to run The 5th Avenue Mile in New York City on September 22, 2012. What sets this team apart is that they'll be putting old bridesmaids, prom, or other fancy dresses back to use by running in them (yes, guys too!) and collecting pledges for Village Volunteers.
Five of the Runaway Bridesmaids will continue on in dresses to run for the cause by covering 26.2 miles for the ING New York City Marathon on November 4, 2012! Learn more.
Roughly three million women and girls worldwide are victims of sex trafficking -- a modern-day slave trade -- and many die in their late 20s of AIDS. Donations to Runaway Bridesmaids go to Village Volunteers' partner, New Light -- which provides shelter, healthcare, education, and HOPE for the children of sex workers in India's largest red light district. Since 2000, New Light has provided shelter, educational opportunities, recreational facilities, healthcare and legal aid for the children, girls and women in the Kalighat community. By taking a moment to pledge or to join the Runaway Bridesmaids fundraising team, together you can begin to break the cycle of sexual slavery.

For our part, Adventure Life is encouraging pledges by providing a little added incentive: The person who donates or collects the most pledges wins our Classic Peru tour, which includes visits to Machu Picchu, Sacred Valley, and Cusco. In the spirit of the fundraiser, travelers also visit the Casa de Acogida Mantay, a thriving women's shelter and long-time Adventure Life grant recipient. We visit the important Inca ruins of Sacsayhuamán, Pisac and Ollantaytambo, and we spend two days exploring the lost city of Machu Picchu in this tour. Along our journey we explore the witches' market in Cusco, bargain over tapestries in Pisac, and walk off the beaten path in the rural Andes.
