Day 6: Falmouth Bay, Antigua

  • Ship
  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
Falmouth Bay is a short walk from Nelson's Dockyard and the English Harbour. It is surrounded by historic buildings and mills. This harbor and quiet village has plenty of shops, restaurants, and the yacht club. Historic sites, tasty cuisine, and a lively cultural scene can all be found on Antigua. But most often it's the beauty and versatility of the island's 365 beaches that draw travelers from afar.

Falmouth Bay – Helicopter flight to Monserrat Volcano: This is a unique, rare, and exclusive opportunity to visit and tour Montserrat, and to witness an active volcano from a safe distance but close up. Whilst the volcanic Exclusion Zone covers the entire southeastern half of the island, as well as extending four kilometers off-shore along the eastern coast to what is known as the Maritime Exclusion Zone, there are various vantage points from where it is possible to view the volcano and the destruction it has wrought on the island. Visitors can learn about its geological origins and history as well as view the volcano from safe locations around the island. You are met at the ship by your tour guide and driven to the helicopter pad 30 minutes away from St John’s. Here board your awaiting private helicopter for a fully narrated and truly memorable and unique Montserrat Volcano tour. On this 45-minute, pilot-narrated flight, fly to Montserrat to tour its "Exclusion Zone", an area covering 80 sq. kms made off-limits to both ground transportation and habitation. This makes the helicopter the only way to get an up-close look at the Soufriere Hills Volcano. The volcano rises to 3,000 feet above sea level and frequently emits a combination of ash, smoke and steam. Survey the massive Tar River Gorge and Delta found 1,000 feet below, which has formed as a result of pyroclastic flows. Witness what's left of small villages devastated by past eruptions before touring the charred remains of Plymouth, the country’s former capital, now uninhabited and in some places buried under 40 feet of ash. Your adventure ends back in Antigua with a bird's eye view of your beautiful yacht!
Duration: 2.5 hours

Falmouth Bay – Reef Raider: Captain your own 2 seater inflatable motorboat on a guided tour of Antigua’s south coast and discover the exciting underwater world of Antigua. Board your air-conditioned transportation and ride through Antigua’s countryside, rich in daily West Indian life, local villages, and old churches that exemplify West Indian culture, to Jolly Harbour. At the calm waters of Jolly Harbour you are met by an experienced guide who gives you a safety briefing on how to operate your 2-seater inflatable with 30hp engine safely and allows time to acquaint yourself with the boat. Then it’s time to follow your experienced guide out of the harbor and embark on a spectacular adventure along Antigua’s south coast in and out of bays and around reefs to Antigua’s premier snorkeling area, Cades Reef. Here you are given expert instruction in snorkeling before you are invited to put on your mask, fins, and buoyancy belt and set out, explore, and enjoy the home to the colorful Caribbean marine life including parrotfish, damselfish, grunts and angelfish, amongst many others. Or you can simply take a swim or relax and soak up the sun in the idyllic location onboard the boat. The time is yours to enjoy the fantastic scenery. You then are guided back to Jolly Harbour along the shoreline seeing dozens of beaches with crystal-clear Caribbean waters. Have another opportunity to soak up the Antiguan sun and see the Antiguan southwest coast line before returning to the pier.
Duration: 4 hours

Falmouth Bay – Swimming with Stingrays: An outstanding tour and an opportunity to swim with, touch and feed the stingrays of Antigua in the Caribbean Sea. The stingrays are very friendly and very gentle. Board your air-conditioned transportation in Falmouth Marina and ride through Antigua’s countryside, rich in daily West Indian life, local villages, and old churches exemplifying West Indian culture to Seatons, some 20 minutes away. Start your adventure at Stingray City’s land base where you can enjoy the company of their monkeys and parrots, and the hospitality of the experienced Stingray City’s Guides. Following your safety briefing a short speedboat ride whisks you to a shallow pool with a white sand bottom surrounded by beautiful coral reef in the Caribbean Sea. You can stand up or swim with the stingrays, who greet you with the familiarity of an old friend. You are given an opportunity to hand-feed the stingrays and capture the moment with photographs! After feeding, snorkeling, and taking some pictures with your new friends, return to the land base where you can rinse off the seawater under the bright Caribbean sun, shower from a coconut tree and enjoy a complimentary rum or fruit punch, browse in the gift shop, and just share this unique experience before heading back to the ship.
Duration: 3 hours

Falmouth Bay – Segway Fort Conqueror: Travel back to a time in Antigua’s history in 1706 when the British built one of its most impressive forts to protect against French invasion. Conquer the trail leading to this most impressive structure of defense, built with full masonic honors, as your Segway PT moves you securely down the path of history after a complete orientation. Be amazed at how easy it is to maneuver this phenomenon of motion as it carries you through the large wooden gates of Fort James where a spectacular sight of the Caribbean Sea awaits. After conquering the fort, embark on an endless adventure cruising by beach picnic parks, scores of fruit trees, and miles of beach in minutes on your zero emission Segway as knowledgeable and fun guides fill you in on interesting facts about the area. After the Segway adventure, enjoy delicious refreshments and cool drinks around a picnic table while indulging in a breathtaking view at one of the island's most popular beach bars. With time to relax on the beach you can take a dip in the beautiful sea before returning to the ship.

Grande Anse – Mangrove Kayaking: Departing from the quayside of Grande Anse by boat, sail along the coastline of Fort de France bay to a small islet where the kayaks are waiting for you. Upon arrival, receive a brief kayak and safety briefing. Paddling from the islet, you enter a natural, peaceful mangrove. Your guide tells you about the flora and fauna that you see on the way. The calm water is ideal for novice kayakers as well. During the paddle under a vegetation umbrella in the mangrove you feel very close to nature. On the way back make a stop on a beach where you have some time to relax and have a refreshment.

If you are lucky enough to have a late call, don’t miss Mac’s Lobster Pizza.

Pleasant, which offers a marvelous view of your yacht, the wider Caribbean Sea, and the surrounding Grenadine Islands. For this stop your camera is a must- have as the view leaves you breathless. The adventure then continues up the Atlantic Coast with its alternating ocean views and beautiful roadside floral scenery as you make your way to the Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary. Mr. Orton G. King, owner of this sanctuary, has spent most of his time tending to his precious and endangered hawksbill turtles. Listen to him spin tales of these ancient inhabitants of the deep. Make a brief stop at the Whaleboner bar and screen-printing shop where you may be lucky to see the artists at work. Try your hand at the technique and watch beautiful patterns emerge on the fabric. You may browse the boutique and purchase your very own piece of this island specialty. Return to Port Elizabeth where brightly colored items wave gaily in the wind.
Duration: 2.5 hours

Port Elizabeth - Unique Mustique: Mustique lies 5 miles from Bequia, and measures 3 miles by 1 ½. The island is privately owned and has long attracted the elite of the world which includes the British Royalty. Our guide and driver were very good with their knowledge and were very helpful with our questions. It was a very pleasant visit that would have been impossible to do on our own. Hotels and restaurants were fantastic. The special places we got to go to, like the kitchens, were great. Enjoyed the entire trip!
