Remote, rugged, and brimming with natural wonders, Patagonia has long fascinated adventurers as one of the most spellbinding places on earth. Your own exploration begins in the Falkland Islands, a haven for seabirds, followed by a trip around mythical Cape Horn, the “End of the Earth,” on your way to the dense forests and element sculpted Andes. Explore UNESCO-designated Torres del Paine National Park, one of the last vestiges of untouched wilderness on Earth. Prehistoric caves and Chiloe’s timbered churches round out your epic journey.
Involves minimal physical effort and is typically associated with leisurely activities. Activities are low-intensity or last less than a few hours each day.
Board your early morning flight to Stanley, capital of the Falkland Islands. Enjoy a short tour of this British-flavored town before embarking the Sea Adventurer.
Board Zodiacs to visit Saunders Island, a working sheep farm. A narrow stretch of open dunes and moss-covered mounts known as “The Neck” is home to large colonies of rockhopper and gentoo penguins, as well as cormorants and black-browed albatross. In the afternoon go ashore on Steeple Jason Island, home to the largest black-browed albatross colony, as well as large numbers of rockhopper, gentoo, and Magellanic penguins.
Cruise around Cape Horn, the “End of the Earth.” Set at the crowning headland of the Andes Mountains, the imposing Cape is legendary for its powerful winds and perilous waves, which the Sea Adventurer easily navigates. Weather permitting, board Zodiacs for a visit to the lighthouse and a small memorial dedicated to the many seamen who perished here. Afterward, watch for giant petrels while cruising the mountain-fringed Beagle Channel through the Tierra del Fuego Archipelago. This evening, explore Puerto Williams on your own.
Arrive early in Ushuaia, the world’s southernmost city and gateway to Tierra del Fuego National Park. Numerous trails allow you to discover some of the park’s 160,000 glacier-carved acres of towering peaks, deep valleys, and cliff-lined coasts. Follow the footpath to the immense beaver dam for stunning vistas over Lapataia Bay.
Head westward along the Beagle Channel, navigating Garibaldi Fjord on your way through majestic Glacier Alley. Take a Zodiac cruise along Pia Fjord and take a walk on its namesake glacier.
Day 8: Tierra del Fuego, Chile / Strait of Magellan
Cruise along Tierra del Fuego via the Strait of Magellan and Almirantazgo Sound. Board Zodiacs to land in Alberto de Agostini National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Preserve. No roads lead into the park, making the small ship ideal for exploring this majestic landscape of deep fjords, towering mountains, and glittering glaciers. Conditions permitting, visit a small colony of Magellanic penguins at Tucker Islet.
Transit the White Narrows during a full day of cruising through the scenic Chilean Fjords. Arrive in Puerto Natales, the gateway to Torres del Paine, late this evening, where the ship remains for the next two nights.
Take a walk on the wild side in the remote, rugged Torres del Paine National Park. Situated in the heart of Chile’s Patagonia region, this UNESCO World Biosphere comprises glacial-fed lakes, deep fjords, dense beech forests, and mammoth granite peaks. More than 100 species of native birds make their home here, including the colossal Andean condor, while herds of guanaco — an orange-colored cousin of the llama — dot the lush pampas.
Enjoy another full day of Chilean Patagonia in Bernardo O’Higgins National Park, which borders Torres del Paine. Pass by translucent Figueroa Lagoon as you navigate your way through the maze of fjords, channels, and islands. Step back in time at the ancient Cueva del Milodón or Milodon Cave, where fossils of its namesake 10-foot-tall sloth were found.
Board Zodiacs for a cruise near the face of Pio XI Glacier, the largest glacier in the Patagonian Icefield. Also known as Brüggen Glacier, Pio XI is one of the few glaciers on earth to have advanced in recent years and covers an area of nearly 500 square miles.
A morning transit through the English Narrows leads to a day of cruising among the lucent icebergs and massive glaciers of Messier Channel and Patagonian Fjords.
Chiloe’s collection of wooden churches, built of native timber during the 18th and 19th centuries, has earned its UNESCO World Heritage status, and you will see a number of the 16 churches on visits to Dalcahue and Achao on Isla Quinchao. You may choose to take an excursion to Chiloe National Park, which incorporates zones ranging from dunes to rainforest to peat bogs.
