This 8-day voyage aboard L'Austral brings you to discover the Great Barrier Reef and its myriad islands and islets bathing in the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. Stretching out over 2,300 km and home to 400 coral species and 1,500 fish species, the reef offers spectacularly beautiful and varied scenery. Its high concentration of species has earned it an international reputation as an excellent spot for scuba diving. Its neon fish, clown fish, sponges and other crustaceans make this ecosystem one of a kind. Your journey gives you unprecedented access to this rich and remarkable underwater world.

Day 1

    Embark in Cairns, Australia

    With its lagoons and waters ranging from blue, nearly white, to translucent turquoise, Cairns is surely the most exotic colonial city in the world. Embark your ship this evening between 4 and 5 PM. Settle in to your cabin and familiarize yourself with the ship and her crew.

    Day 2

      Townsville, Australia

      Discover Townsville, a vibrant region with fascinating diversity that encompasses tropical islands, beautiful coastal towns, rainforests, rugged Outback and country terrain all supported by Australia's largest tropical city. Your stop in this northern Australia township offers several opportunities to explore its rich wildlife and rainforest habitat. Choose from several optional excursions including a visit the Billabong Sanctuary, nestled in the hills of the Mutatunga Range and set amongst rainforest, wetlands and eucalyptus trees. Alternatively, venture to Magnetic Island, a World Heritage Site, only 8 km off the Coast of Townsville, midway between Cairns and Airlie Beach. “Maggie” (as the island is known to the locals) is in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and surrounded by fringing reefs. You can also choose to explore the Town Common Wetlands on the edge of the beautiful Rowes Bay, only a short 15 minute drive from the city’s center . The wetlands have an abundance of wildlife. Up to 280 bird species have been recorded in the area. Magpie geese, Brolgas and many others gather here to feed and nest. Spend several hours on a leisurely walk in the area.

      Day 3

        Hamilton Island, Australia

        Hamilton Islands is known as the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands and to the Great Barrier Reef. Today, choose from two optional excursions. Take an afternoon trip by catamaran to the Reefworld Pontoon located on Hardy’s Reef as part of the outer Great Barrier Reef. Alternatively, join an excursion to Whitehaven Beach by motorized catamaran and get to one of the top 10 beaches in the world! Here you have the chance to swim in crystal clear waters or take a leisurely walk along the pristine beach. Along the way to the beach you are served an afternoon tea with scones and jam.

        Day 4

          Percy Island, Australia

          Beautiful and virtually untouched, Percy Island was reclaimed by Queensland and much of it is now a national park. Details of your excursions in port art forthcoming.

          Day 5

            Sailing the Great Barrier Reef

            Azure waters, immaculate sandy beaches, and fascinating plant and wildlife welcomes you today as your cruise through the Great Barrier Reef. Discover a multitude of tropical fish, sea anemones, giant clams, starfish and even sumptuous sea turtles, in the heart of dazzling coral banks. Many a diving enthusiast would be tempted to live year round here! Although a specific itinerary for today is being finalized, it is sure to include an opportunity to discover this exceptional marine ecosystem.

            Day 6

              At Sea

              Spend your day relaxing on board your luxurious ship as your sail southward along the eastern Australian Coast. Prepare for the last leg of your journey in New South Wales.

              Day 7

                Newcastle, Australia

                The second largest city in the Australian state of New South Wales, Newcastle is a thriving port city. Home to an vibrant music and arts scene, its location at the mouth of the Hunter River also allows access to the wine-growing region of the Hunter Valley. Details about you excursions today are being finalized.

                Day 8

                  Disembark in Sydney, Australia

                  Warm and carefree, Sydney is a great seductress nestled in the heart of one of the most beautiful harbours in the world. Between beaches and skyscrapers, hip boutiques and designer bars, hotels with a contemporary architecture and monuments from the Victorian era, the capital of New South Wales is both trendy and classic. Disembark this morning in Sydney. Transfer for the airport for your homeward flights, or choose to spend the day exploring this metropolis independently.
