The Liberty Star never follows a fixed itinerary, enabling the Captain to chart a course for the best wind and weather. As a result, each departure is a little different. The following is a sample itinerary that might represent your journey:
Arrive on St. John, the natural gem of the US Virgin Islands. The island is home to the National Marine Sanctuary and the famous Rockefeller resort, Caneel Bay. Spend the afternoon exploring the quaint streets of Cruz Bay or snorkel in the clear waters off the reef.
On Tortola, head ashore for Cane Garden Bay to sample rum at the Caribbean's oldest continually operated distillery.
Jost Van Dyke, the westernmost island of the British Virgins, is home to White Bay beach, the Soggy Dollar Bar, and Foxy's - the quintessential island watering hole. Named after a 17th-century Dutch pirate, Jost Van Dyke has a sleepy Caribbean atmosphere and is less developed than other British Virgin Islands. It is a favorite of island-hopping folks who stop for music, dancing, and tropical drinks.
The highlight of Virgin Gorda is The Baths, one of the Caribbean's natural wonders. This spectacular formation of gigantic boulders has created grottoes and caves that you can explore on foot. The island is also home to the famous Little Dix Bay resort, as well as the Bitter End Yacht Club.
Norman Island is reputed to have inspired Robert Louis Stevenson's literary masterpiece Treasure Island. Legend has it that pirate treasure is buried at a natural formation called The Indians, which are half-submerged rocks that form an underwater labyrinth frequented by divers and snorkelers. The island is deserted except for a few seabirds, several footpaths, and the Pirate's Bight Bar. One trail leads to Spy Glass Hill, a challenging half-hour hike that rewards your efforts with fantastic views. Pirates once used this lookout to spot Spanish Galleons returning home, heavy with gold and treasure.
