What's your Adventure?

Day 1 Dakar, Senegal

Arrive in Dakar, Africa’s western most city, in the early morning where you will be met and transferred to your hotel for breakfast and the morning at leisure. After lunch an afternoon tour of Dakar offers an up-close look at the highlights of this energetic, eclectic, and cosmopolitan capital city including the stunning Great Mosque, handsome French colonial buildings, and President’s Palace. Also visit the picturesque Kermel Market, overflowing with fruits and flowers, before setting off for the charming Medina. Return to the hotel for a welcome dinner and overnight.

Day 2 Dakar / Embark the Odyssey

After breakfast choose a full-day birding excursion to search for West Africa’s avifauna, or depart for a tour of infamous Gorée Island, a World Heritage Site. From the 15th – 19th centuries Gorée was a slave-trading center, and witness the contrasts between the dungeon-like slave quarters and the elegant colonial mansions of the slave traders. Explore the moving 18th-century House of Slaves, the Women’s Museum, and the fortified Le Castel, offering splendid views. After lunch continue your exploration of Dakar. Embark the Odyssey this afternoon.

Day 3 At Sea

As you cruise toward the Cape Verde Islands lecturers offer natural history and cultural perspectives on these starkly beautiful islands.

Day 4 São Tiago Island, Cape Verde Islands

São Tiago, the largest of the Cape Verde Islands, is crowned by Antonia Peak which rises 4,500 feet above fertile farmlands. Today choose from three tour options. A full-day island tour takes you through green valleys and mountains to tiny villages, the Botanical Gardens and Horticultural Institute, and the bustling town of Assomada. Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, then join a guided walk through seaside Tarrafal, including the central market and ancient prison-turned-museum. Return to the relaxed capital city of Praia and explore its colonial remnants, the fortress of São Filipe, local market, and museum.

Or, choose to visit Cidada Velha. Founded in 1462, it was an important stop on the slave trading route. Explore Praia before lunch on board, then enjoy a tour of the Botanical Gardens. Birders depart for a full-day excursion to search for the cream-colored courser, European golden plover, and gray-headed kingfisher.

Day 5 São Vicente Island

Birders head out this morning from Mindelo, while the rest of the group visits Fortim, the site of an old fort, with spectacular views. In the lovely town see the Governor’s Palace, court house, local market, and Amilcar Cabral Square, flanked by brightly painted colonial Portuguese houses. We also enjoy stunning views from the top of Mt. Verde. After lunch at a local restaurant explore the rocky beaches of Calhau.

Day 6 Santo Antão Island

Cape Verde’s greenest island boasts a spectacular arrayof landscapes, from stark volcanic flatsto lush green peaks and tropical valleys. After breakfast, Zodiacs whisk you to Puerto Novo where you will embark on a scenic drive along the coast and into the mountains. Gentle strolls and more active hikes reveal dramatic vistas, steep volcanic peaks, lush farmlands, quaint towns as your ship sets sail for the Canary Islands.

Days 7-8 Cruising the Atlantic Ocean

Be on deck to watch for pilot whales and dolphins. Our lecturers introduce the Canary Islands, once a stepping stone in the era of exploration.

Day 9 Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands

An early morning arrival in the Canary Islands’ capital of Tenerife gives you a full day to explore. A cultural tour visits charming villages, dramatic miradors (viewpoints), and the university town of La Laguna. This World Heritage Site, designated for being the first, non-fortified Spanish colonial town, is a showcase of superb examples of 16th – 18th-century architecture, a layout that became the model for many American colonial towns.

A natural history tour includes the spectacular Botanical Gardens and a walk through the town of La Orotava. At Teide National Park, a World Heritage Site, view the twisted volcanic formations of basalt and obsidian surrounding Spain’s highest peak. After lunch at El Parador, enjoy a gentle or a more active hike to view the Roques de Garcia—bizarrely eroded rocks set in ochre plains and rivers of lava at the mountain’s base. Birders spend the day looking for some of the 200 species that populate the varied habitat.

Day 10 Agadir, Morocco / Taroudant

After breakfast set off on a drive from Agadir to the inland town of Taroudant, often called “little Marrakech,” to walk along the fortress ramparts and through the central plaza. The colorful Berber Market offers a fascinating array of spices and quality handicrafts, while the artisan souk displays silverwork, leather goods, and carpets. Enjoy lunch here and return to Agadir.

Day 11 Disembark the Odyssey

Disembark this morning for your continued journey home.

    Ship Highlights
  • Passengers : 110

One of the finest adventure ships afloat, the Odyssey is a 110-passenger luxury expedition vessel, ideally suited for cruising in off-the-beaten-path locales. On all Odyssey expeditions, guests have access to a fleet of Zodiacs, which allows remote landings anywhere nature or curiosity dictates.

All cabins on a Clipper Odyssey cruise have an ocean view, safe, minibar, individually controlled heat/air conditioner, in-room music system, and sitting area with sofa. Beds can be configured for twin or queen-size sleeping arrangements, and all cabins have an en suite bathroom complete with shower and small bathtub. In the comfort of their cabin, passengers can track the progress of their expedition on the Global Positioning System broadcast—a highlight of a Odyssey voyage for adventure-minded guests.

Additional facilities include a gourmet kitchen featuring American and international cuisine, dining room, lounge, small library and gym, outdoor pool, and gift shop. An elevator services all passenger cabin decks.

A fleet of Zodiac landing craft can be launched in minutes to take passengers ashore in places where no infrastructure exists. The vessel is equipped with state-of-the-art satellite navigation and communication equipment including telephone, fax, and email.

An outdoor swimming pool, dedicated jogging track, and two sun decks offer ample opportunities for outdoor recreation. Inside, the spacious public areas of the ship include two lounges, a small library, and a single seating dining room.

An experienced cruise staff, physician, and onboard lecturers accompany all voyages to enhance the passengers’ enjoyment of the places visited.

All meals are prepared to order on board. The ship's chefs, graduates of the finest American culinary schools, combine the highest quality American ingredients with the influences and spices of the places the Odyssey visits. The resulting "fusion cuisine" provides a taste of the destinations visited.
