An expedition cruise to the Antarctic is the trip of a lifetime for many travelers. Add to this, time in South Georgia and the Falklands and you have a truly extraordinary experience. Not only is the Falklands history fascinating, it is also home to up to five penguin species and at this time of year nesting albatross can be found. South Georgia is often described as the gem of the Southern Ocean withits spectacular mountains and incredibly large King penguin rookeries. Continuing on to the Antarctic Peninsula and South Shetland Islands, experience sites of historic and scientific interest and bountiful wildlife.

Day 1 Ushuaia & Beagle Channel

Embark MV Polar Star at "the end of the world" (fin del mundo) and sail down the Beagle Channel to begin the adventure of a lifetime.

Day 2 At Sea

Pass the time at sea by relaxing in our library or observation lounge, attend lectures, or spot wildlife from the bridge or deck.

Days 3-4 Falklkand Islands

Here, we are introduced to penguins in a wonderful way. Five species of penguins make their home here - Magellanic, Rockhopper, Gentoo and King. We plan a landing at Stanley to explore the museum containing displays on wildlife, shipwrecks and the 1982 Falklands War, and perhaps to visit an English-style pub. These islands will also capture the interest of birdwatchers with the world's largest colony of black-bowed mollymawks as well as albatross and petrel.

Days 5-6 At Sea

During these days, enjoy our continuing lecture program led by our diverse team of expedition staff or take advantage of our open bridge policy by joining our captain and crew on the bridge.

Days 7-10 South Georgia

Upon landing on the rugged and beautiful islands of South Georgia we will have the opportunity to walk amongst crowds of Marconi penguins, 5 million pairs of which make their home here, as well as Gentoo, Adelie, King and Chinstrap penguins. A landing is planned in Grytviken to learn about Antarctic adventurer Ernest Shackelton, who is buried here. Other planned landings include Prion Island, Cooper Bay, Fortuna, Stromness and Salisbury Plain.

Days 11-13 At Sea & Elephant Island

An afternoon landing or Zodiac cruise is palnned for Point Wild on Elephant Island, the site where 22 men from Shackelton's 1914-17 expedition were stranded for 135 days, surviving by living under two upturned boats. While here, see the plaque and monolith commemorating their rescue and visit a Chinstrap penguin colony.

Day 14 South Shetland Islands

Experience the true diversity of the Antarctic with planned landings at the volcanic Deception Island and Half Moon Island. At Whaler's Bay, we can dig our feet into the black sand and see warm air created by the island's dormant volcano rising as steam. In addition to other sildlife sightings, this area is also ideal for birdwatching with possible sightings of Antarctic tern, kelp gull, skua, Antarctic shag, and sheathbill.

Days 15-16 Antarctic Peninsula

Zodiac cruises allow us close proiximity to towering white icebergs and area of untouched nautre and wildlife. Crowds of penguins and seals will continue to amaze in an environment of pristine wilderness. Possible visits may include Paradise Bay, Nansen Island, Cuverville Island, Cierva Cove, Mikkelson Harbour and other islands and continental sites.

Days 17-18 At Sea

On our journey home we continue to look out for whales, dolphins, and seabirds, and enjoy our concluding lecture program.

Day 19 Ushuaia

This fantastic voyage concludes in Ushuaia where we disembark after breakfast.
