Day 1 Ushuaia, Argentina
Our journey begins in the Tierra del Fuego city of Ushuaia, Argentina. Some call it "the end of the earth"! From this charming city, we board the M/V Polar Star and head down the Beagle Channel.
Days 2-3 Drake Passage and the Antarctic Convergence
This passage is named after Sir Francis Drake, who discovered it in 1578. We cross the Drake Passage while attending lectures and watching for wildlife from the bridge, deck or observation lounge.
Days 4-8 Antarctic Peninsula and Weddell Sea
The special focus during this expedition is the historically and scientifically rich Weddell Sea. We will zodiac cruise around icebergs to isolated and untouched sites with stunning ice capped mountains, rugged glaciers and endless white vistas. We will have the privilege to see amazing wildlife up close in their natural habitat – Gentoo, Adelie, Chinstrap and Marconi Penguins as well Weddell, Leopard, Crabeater and Elephant Seals. Minke and Humpback Whales also call the Weddell Sea home and we will be on the constant lookout for these magnificent creatures. We hope to visit Snow Hill Island and Paulet Island, both containing ruins from huts that kept stranded scientists and explorers alive in the early 20th century, as well as the often iceberg-filled Hope Bay, Devil’s Island and Brown Bluff.
Day 9 South Shetland Islands
Today we plan to being our exploration of the Antarctic Region in the South Shetland Islands, a series of four island groups, some volcanic and 80% of which is covered in permanent ice. We plan to make landings at Deception Island to experience the warm volcanic vents in the ground caused by the island’s dormant volcano as well as Hannah Point or Half Moon Island.
Days 10-12 Drake Passage and Beagle Channel
We now head back across the Drake Passage and weather permitting, will pass Cape Horn. We then turn back up the Beagle Channel arriving in Ushuaia to depart the ship after breakfast.
