Day 1 Athens, Greece
Above the city, looking out towards the blue Aegean, stands the Acropolis. Here lie the ruins of a culture 2,500 years old: the Propylaea; the Temple of Athena Nike; the Erechtheum temple, and, most famous of all, the Parthenon. Meanwhile, modern day Athens is a blend of past and present. Historical and archaeological museums are popular attractions along with performing arts and sporting events.
Day 2 Gythion, Greece
Truly one of the world’s original great urban centers, the port city of Gythion was founded by the ancient Phoenicians prior to 400 B.C. Gracing the isolated southern edge of the Peloponnese, the city has a rich political and cultural heritage. The site of many ancient battles, today Gythion is a port that is known for its ferries to Kythira and Crete as well as its superb seafood.
Day 3 Argostoli / Cephalonia, Greece
An island this historic and beautiful always has a story to tell. Named for a mythological general, it is a tapestry of archaeology, nature and culture that will fascinate all visitors. Take in the stunning views of Myrtos beach or explore the Melisani caves, and gaze in wonder at the kaleidoscope of colors that await you. Chat with locals at the farmers’ markets or just stroll through town, enjoying the colorful architecture.
Day 4 Butrint National Park, Albania
Inhabited since prehistoric times, Butrint has been the site of a Greek colony, a Roman city and a bishopric. Following a period of prosperity under Byzantine administration, then a brief occupation by the Venetians, the city was abandoned in the late Middle Ages after marshes formed in the area. The present archaeological site is a repository of ruins representing each period in the city’s development. The city of Butrint is one of the fragments which form the fabric of Albania's ancient cultural landscape. Nestling in the highlands in the far south of the country and surrounded by dense vegetation, Butrint was linked to the Mediterranean by the Vivari canal, which runs from the Butrint Lake to the Ionian Sea.
Day 5 At Sea
Relax aboard your ship and enjoy the numerous amenities on board the Wind Spirit.
Day 6 Siracusa, Italy
Founded by ancient Greek Corinthians, Syracusa has a long and storied history and was once described by Cicero as the “greatest Greek city and the most beautiful of them all”. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the process of recovering and restoring the historical center of the city has been ongoing for the last two decades. Explore the Temple of Apollo, the Fountain of Arethusa as well as the Theatre, one of the largest ever built by ancient Greeks and still in use today. As well, take in the sights of commanding Venetian palazzos, medieval castles and strongholds and the stunning natural scenery.
Day 7 Gozo, Malta
The island of Gozo is approximately one third the size of Malta but it is robust in culture and history. The landscapes are rural and agricultural, and the seascapes are stunning. Gozo’s population suffered a devastating raid during the Middle Ages and its story of recovery is fascinating. Today, its villages offer an eclectic assortment of restaurants, bars, and markets which host its welcoming and sociable residents throughout the day and night.
