Day 3: San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua
San Juan del Sur is a tranquil fishing village nestled at the head of a horseshoe-shaped bay on the Pacific coast of southern Nicaragua. The lovely bay is peppered with small, private yachts, and commercial fishing boats. Sign up for a shore excursion and see it all. Visit one of Nicaragua's national parks to observe the active Masaya Volcano, and shop for treasures at the Indian Market.
Day 4: Playas del Coco, Costa Rica
Best known for its busy beach, Playas del Coco is the largest village in Guanacaste Province. Not only a popular area for sport fishing and scuba diving, Playas del Coco is the gateway for surfers to reach the fabulous waves at Ollie’s Point and Witches Rock. The beach of gray-brown sand runs for almost two miles along a horseshoe-shaped bay surrounded by steep cliffs. Unlike most Costa Rican beaches where the water is blue green, the water at Playas del Coco is blue gray. Playas del Coco seems to be having a constant fiesta and there are plenty of shops, restaurants, casinos, markets and bars. Head to Marino Las Baulas National Park to see the thousands of Leatherback, Pacific Green and Hawksbill turtles and their nesting behavior. Other sites to see include Palo Verde National Park, the home of monkeys, crocodiles, and a wide variety of birds, and Buena Vista Lodge, for canopy tours, hanging bridges and hot springs.
Day 5: Quepos, Costa Rica
The former banana-exporting town of Puerto Quepos is your basecamp for a day of rainforest adventure. Take a walk along trails that weave up to waterfalls, or ride horseback to a beautiful jungle pool. A float trip through a mangrove swamp populated by monkeys, crocodiles, egrets, and herons is also available. Or you may choose a nature walk through Manuel Antonio National Park, with its lovely beaches, easy trails, and abundant animal life.
Day 6: Bahia Drake, Costa Rica
Believed to be a port visited by Sir Frances Drake in the 16th century, Bahía Drake is actually composed of two towns, Agujitas, along the southern shore of the bay; and Drake, to the north. Your Costa Rica trip includes exploration of its beautiful and remote coastline of sparkling coves, pristine beaches, and rocky crags extends for miles and the bay can only be reached by road during the dry season. The main attraction of Bahía Drake is Corcovado National Park, a nature preserve and tropical rainforest that occupies almost a third of the Osa Peninsula. Visitors are almost guaranteed to see some of the most incredible wildlife living in the jungles of the reserve including red-eyed tree frogs, tapirs, harpy eagles, white-lipped peccaries, monkeys, and scarlet macaws. Swimmers can have the amazing opportunity to share the warm waters with marlins, dolphins, and humpback whales.
Day 7: Curu & Tortuga Island, Costa Rica
Spend a morning exploring the Curú National Wildlife Refuge, a private reserve of which two-thirds is preserved as primary forest. The reserve includes 4.5 kilometers (2.8 miles) of coastline, with tiny coves and three beaches. Although it is small, there is an abundance of wildlife to be seen in this reserve — including up to 200 species of birds! Be on the lookout for capuchin and howler monkeys, as well as sloths and anteaters.
This afternoon cruise to Tortuga Island - actually two islands – uninhabited and picture perfect– that lie just off the Nicoya Peninsula. Characterized by palm-fringed beaches and lush tropical flora, Tortuga is pretty and peaceful and offers terrific sheltered swimming and snorkeling in warm waters. Nearby, Curú Biological Reserve is small and privately owned. Easy walking paths within the forest might reveal an ocelot, an anteater, or a colony of capuchin monkeys. Isla Tortuga lies three kilometers offshore.
Day 8: Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica
Disembark this morning for your continued journey home.

Adventure Life took care of everything! All we had to do was show up when we were supposed to, which made our first trip to Costa Rica largely stress-free and incredibly fun. Our trip reps, Hannah and Mariethony, were helpful and responsive, getting back to us by email usually within a few hours. Our accommodations were all great, and we got incredibly blessed with some absolutely stellar guides and drivers.
Our Jungle & Beach trip was an excellent balance of adventure and rest. We got to try out a lot of different activities, including snorkeling, hiking, white water rafting and kayaking, while also partaking of some rest around the pool or by the ocean. We enjoyed seeing and exploring the beautiful Caribbean side of the country.

For our first trip to Costa Rica, Adventure Life designed a tour that meets the interests, ecological and adventure, of our party; but also takes into account our physical limitations sine we are all septuagenarian. We are looking forward to the trip.
