Day 1: Alexandria, Virginia / Embark

Arrive in Alexandria and transfer to the Yorktown. Settle in to your cabin and familiarize yourself with the ship and her crew. Overnight aboard the ship.

Day 2: Alexandria, Virgina

Choose between visiting the nation’s capital or driving to Mount Vernon to see George Washington’s estate.

In Washington, D.C., enjoy a guided overview tour of monuments such as the White House, the National Mall, the Capitol, and the Washington Monument. Visit the Smithsonian American Art Museum, where more than 7,000 artists are represented. Artists include masters such as Winslow Homer, Georgia O’Keeffe, Edward Hopper, Roy Lichtenstein, and John Singer Sargent.

Alternatively, visit George Washington’s beloved Mount Vernon, a massive estate with gardens which served as an experimental nursery for his young country’s agricultural development. Spend the day touring the sweeping grounds.

Day 3: Annapolis, Maryland

Arrive in Annapolis and explore its narrow brick streets and colonial mansions. Tour the Maryland State House, the oldest U.S. capitol in continuous legislative use; the William Paca House and Garden, the expansive estate of a former governor of Maryland; and the historic U.S. Naval Academy. Enjoy leisure time and stroll through Annapolis’ historic neighborhoods. Return to the Yorktown to sail through the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal en route to Philadelphia.

Day 4: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Today visit majestic and historic Philadelphia. Arrive in Philadelphia and visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art, one of the largest museums in the United States. The world-renowned collection contains more than 227,000 objects in over 200 galleries, housed in a landmark Greek Revival structure in the heart of the city. Enjoy the Barnes Foundation, known for its extensive collection of European and American masters of Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, and early modern art. Alternatively, visit some of the our nation’s most sacred sites and treasures, including Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.

Day 5: Cape May

Arrive in Cape May, one of the oldest resort towns in the United States. Wander the trails of Cape May Point State Park and glimpse wildlife from observation decks throughout the park. Continue to the historic Cape May Lighthouse, which was built in 1859. Climb its 199 steps for stunning views of the shore before enjoying some time at your leisure.

Day 6-7: New York City

Spend two days in exciting New York City and enjoy a choice of guided tours which encompass the top art museums in the city. Choices include: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, America’s premier museum, with a permanent collection containing more than two million works ranging from classical antiquity and Ancient Egypt to modern art; the Museum of Modern Art, with a collection that includes works of architecture, design, drawings, painting, sculpture, photography, prints, illustrated books, film, and electronic media; the Whitney Museum of American Art, focusing on 20th- and 21st-century American art with a particular emphasis on living artists; and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, where a renowned and continuously expanding collection of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, early modern, and contemporary art is housed in Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic cylindrical building.

Alternatively, enjoy a walking tour through lower Manhattan and visit its historic harbor. Explore Battery Park, the U.S. Custom House, Fraunces Tavern, Wall Street, Trinity Church, the New York Stock Exchange, and take the ferry to the Statue of Liberty.

Day 8: Old Saybrook, Connecticut

From port in Old Saybrook, travel to Essex and explore this quintessential New England town. The streets are lined with Federal and Colonial houses, as well as charming antique shops and art galleries. Enjoy a scenic ride though the Connecticut River Valley and Selden Neck State Park aboard an antique steam train. In the afternoon, drive to Old Lyme to visit the Florence Griswold Museum. Old Lyme resident Florence Griswold turned her family’s home into an artists’ retreat in 1899, which gave birth to the Lyme Art Colony, America’s center of Impressionism.

Alternately, visit Mystic Seaport, a living maritime museum consisting of more than 60 historical buildings, sailing ships, and boats.

Day 9: Newport, Rhode Island

Sail into the yacht-filled harbor of Newport, the one-time summer playground of New York’s wealthiest families. Many of the grand 'cottages' they built are now cared for by The Preservation Society of Newport County and are open to the public. Visit the Breakers, the 70-room mansion of Cornelius Vanderbilt II, the National Museum of American Illustration housed in the Vernon Court mansion, the Redwood Library and Athenaeum, and the Newport Art Museum.

Day 10: Gloucester, Massachusettts

Drive to Boston from the port of Gloucester for an excursion to the Museum of Fine Arts, which houses 450,000 works of art ranging from ancient Egyptian to contemporary. Also visit the recently renovated Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, hosting historic and contemporary art exhibitions. Alternatively, tour iconic sites of historic Boston such as the Public Garden, Beacon Hill, sites along the Freedom Trail, and the Old North Church.

Day 11: Gloucester

After breakfast, disembark in Gloucester and transfer to the airport for your connecting flight home.
