Fire in the Galapagos
Isabela Island (Renee Noffke)
Isabela Island from my April 2008 Galapagos tour
News from the Galapagos – fire on Isabela Island. The fire was started accidentally by a local farmer, who was burning weeds on his land. The fire quickly spread out of control, and now many farms in the Cerro Verde area have been affected. It seems a classic example of the serious impact we humans can have on fragile ecosystems like the Galapagos Islands. Fortunately, the fire has not threatened any Galapagos species, and tourism has not been affected, but the fire will certainly have an impact. Having visited Isabela Island myself, it makes me ponder that eternal question – should people really be there at all?!? I love travelling to unique and remote areas of the world, but I always feel just a little bit guilty about being there. I think the moral of the story is that for those of us who love to travel, we must respect the places we visit and tread as lightly as possible.
