Day 1 Depart from Reykjavik

Welcome to Reykjavík, the capital of Iceland and starting point of the expedition. In spite of the fact that Iceland lies below the Arctic Circle, Reykjavik is the world's northernmost capital of a sovereign state. However it is not the only feature that makes this city special. Not far from Reykjavík one can find geysers and waterfalls, mountains and glaciers. You may also visit a vast selection of restaurants, museums and shops.

Embark the Sea Spirit in the afternoon and keep an eye open for whales (humpback and minke whales are most common) as the ship sails out of the picturesque bay.

Day 2-3 At Sea

  • Ship
  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
A couple days at sea doesn’t mean idleness and bore. Participate in the expedition team and invited speaker's lectures and presentations, socialize with new friends in the cozy lounge of the ship, or stay on the open decks to watch seabirds and probably whales that escort the ship.

Day 4-5 South Greenland

  • Ship
  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
The Sea Spirit rounds Cape Farewell, the southernmost point in Greenland, and calls in at Greenland’s most southerly town Nanortalik. The town lies at the mouth of beautiful Tasermiut Fjord surrounded by steep mountains that flank an intricate fjord system. The name of the town translated as “the place with polar bears” says that these arctic animals could be often seen hunting on the sea ice outside of the settlement. The local open-air museum demonstrates the fascinating history from Viking and Inuit times to the present days.

The Uunartoq area is famous for its natural hot springs, where you can soak in the geothermal waters watching the icebergs pass by.

Day 6-10 West Greenland

  • Ship
  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
During the next five days, go north and visit some of the enchanting Greenlandic tiny settlements while exploring fascinating fjords of Greenland’s western side.

Formerly called Julianehåb, the town of Qaqortoq is the most populous town in southern Greenland. Placed in a beautiful hillside, the settlement boasts charming colorful houses and an excellent museum. At Hvalsey, visit a church built in the 14th century, one of the best preserved churches in Greenland from that period.

Continue traveling in the wake of the Vikings as the Sea Spirit navigates through the picturesque Eriksfjord to the settlement of Qassiarsuk. The town was founded back in the 10th century, by Eric the Red following his exile from Iceland for murder. You may have the opportunity to see the foundation remains of his manor house and visit the site of the first Christian church ever built in North America. The town of Paamiut is justifiably proud of the church that is like a work of art. It is also an especially good place to spot white-tailed eagles.

In the capital and largest city of Greenland, Nuuk, you may have a chance to see the famous Qilakitsoq mummies at the Greenlandic National Museum and learn about urban arctic living. Also known as Godthåb, Nuuk has a population of over 16,000, making it one of the smallest capital cities in the world by population.

Sisimiut is located 40 km north of the Arctic Circle and is the southernmost settlement with enough snow for dog sledding in winter and spring. Here, you can find more dog sleds than humans.

The town of Ilulissat is best known for unbelievable quantities of icebergs issuing from the nearby Ilulissat Icefjord, into which one of the world’s fastest moving and most active glaciers calves 46 cubic kilometers of ice annually. Attractions in town include the Inuit Art Museum, which contains a large collection of paintings by Greenlandic, Faroese, and Danish artists.

Located on volcanic Disko Island, the small town of Qeqertarsuaq enjoys views of basaltic mountains and the huge icebergs of Disko Bay. Founded in 1773 as a whaling station, Qeqertarsuaq is one of the oldest towns in Greenland. Cultural attractions include a distinctive octagonal church called the “Lord’s Ink Pot”.

This was our first trip to South America and we were a little nervous. But Adventure Life made things so easy! All our questions were answered before we left, and our guide, Vidal, was amazing! He gave us enough space to explore without rushing us along. He also knew where the best picture taking opportunities were, which was great.
