Flying into Quito, Ecuador

Quito, Ecuador

We signed up for the multi-sport adventure tour of the Galpagos, but we added the Amazon jungle at the Sacha Lodge on the recommendation of an Adventure Life staffer. It was a great recommend, and we saw and experienced so much, we can't wait to take another adventure life vacation.

We were met by a welcome guide from Adventure Life, he was friendly and answered all of our questions. He drove us to our hotel, Eungenia, and it was a beautiful little place.

Getting to Sacha Lodge

Sacha Lodge, Ecuador

From Quito, it was a quick flight to the small town, where we boarded ia motorized skiff/ riverboat, it was a lot of fun to check out the sights while we flew down the river. Got some great pics. When we get to the "entrance" of Sacha Lodge, there were restrooms, then we had about a 20 min walk through the jungle to get to the lake which was the true entry point into the lodge. Everything that comes into the lodge comes on canoes. It was amazing.

Don't worry about hiking shoes for Sacha Lodge, they provide everyone with big rubber walking boots called "wellies" it is called the rainforest, so there was a lot of mud. I did have removable arch supports from my hiking boots and they helped a lot, you do a lot of hiking. But, that's what you expect to do for an adventure tour.

Sasha Lodge

Sacha Lodge, Ecuador

We quickly and efficiently paddled to the Sacha Lodge, all of our luggage was magically waiting for us when we got there. And we were greeted on the Pier by the owner, who welcomed us in the main lounge area of the lodge with a welcome beverage and light refreshments. Since this only a few days after we had gotten married, and I had a tough time sleeping dealing with all the last minute wedding details, I went straight to the room to take and nap, and John wandered around and got some great pictures. Sacha Lodge is a beautiful place, it's truelly amazing that you are in the rainforest, and there were great views and things to see every where.

Highlights of our trip, the viewing towers, where you can literally see the curvature of the earth on the horizon; The night time canoe ride, in search of their great big female Cayman! and all the hikes, where you can learn a lot about the flora and fauna from the native guide.

Sacha Lodge

Sacha Lodge, Ecuador

Another great thing about this place is the people, not just the other guests, whom were great company, but the guides, both the native guide and biologist guide were friendly, informative, and just plain nice people. The rainforest is just filled with wildlife, but it sometimes takes a little work to find them.

I also have to mention the food, we were completely surprised to find such a vast array of food and every meal time. Remember _everything_ has to get to the lodge by canoe, and the food was just awesome, there was something for everyone. And always delicious, you work up an apetite going on hikes in the early morning and late until the night---when most animals are the most active. And don't even get me started on the delicate desserts....we love food, and we thought we might have "rough it" a little in the jungle, but the Sacha Lodge always provided a tastey menu. Oh, and I think it's every Wednesday where they have a barbeque down by the pier, and it's sooooo goood. Like I said you work up an apetite.

Back to Quito

Quito, Ecuador

We flew back to Quito and stayed for the day until our next flight to the Galapagos. Quito is an awesome city, and we would like to go back and have more time to explore. You can see the mountain tops that surround the city, and it was definitely much colder climate than the hot, humidity of the jungle. So bring layers. But one of our guides recommended Mosaico cafe, and we met up with another couple we met at Sacha. Mosaico is perched on top of a hill that over looks much of the old town of Quito. We got there just before the sunset, and we had a terrific view, this country is beautiful from the jungles to the cities...and we hadn't even been to the Galapagos yet!

We didn't realize what a great view it would be and so left our cameras in the hotel, so the only picture I have is from my far inferior phone. So, if you go bring your camera.

Welcome to paradise

San Cristobal, Galapagos

Ok, if you have never been to the Galapagos, you HAVE to go. It's an absolutely magical place. But if you do plan this trip, go to the Amazon first. The Amazon is amazing in it's own right, but it's very different. You are in the middle of a jungle surrounded by wildlife, you can hear them singing, calling, chirping, screeching, digging, etc. You just might not be able to see them right away. But it was such an amazing experience.

Now, the Galapagos is like no other place because these animals are not afraid or hiding from humans. You can stumble upon a pelican, a sea lion, a marine iguana much like you can stumble upon a pigeon in New York city. And you are bathed in sunshine. In the jungle, you need mosquito protection --but the rooms were surprisingly bug free. In the Galapagos, you need sun protection.

Our first day we saw a huge black crater and our guide asked our driver to stop so we could take pictures. This wasn't on our itinerary, there were just very accomodating. We then proceeded to drive up into the mountains were we walked around and found the giant tortoises that helped make the Galapagos famous. They were sunbathing, or mudbathing keeping cool in the shade. We ate a nice lunch in a little outdoor patio area and when we got up to use the restroom there was another tortoise in the path right next to the building. They were too cool. And surprisingly--or not, they are much like small turtles we grew up with as kids. They duck their head in to head from danger, and they were just too cute. It's amazing to think how long they live, and just how long it takes them to get that big. The tops of their shells easily came up past my knees, not that we got that close. They still deserve respect, like any living creature. :)

From there our guide Alfredo, also showed us a cave, where we had to do Indiana Jones style crawling to get through some tight spots.

Then we proceeded higher up the mountain to ride bicycles back down to the town. Now it's been a few years since both John and I had been on bikes. And poor John, this was his first lesson in the height difference between most in Ecudor and him. John is 6 foot 4 inches, and the country is just not made for someone his size. He had to adjust his bike seat, and his seat kept falling down while we road. Just make sure if you adjust anything it's locked in, learn from his mistake. The bike ride to the country was a little rough in some patches, but this is an adventure tour, what do you expect? For the most part it was on paved road, but then you turn off to a side road. And my other piece of advice, is that if you find you are speeding to fast for your comfort and you don't have control of the bike, DO NOT slam on the brakes, pump the brakes...I pumped my brakes, but when I failed to slow down, I realized that if I just stopped pedaling eventually I'd slow down naturally, instead of unnaturally slamming myself into the ground. Got it?

And follow your guide's lead, he is the expert.

When we got to town on our bikes (our driver had delivered our luggage), we were on our own for dinner an shopping. We walked along a little pier and found huge pelicans just hanging around. Then to our right was a small jetty of rocks and an old pier, where about 20 sealions were resting. We were thrilled...little did we know this was just the beginning. One of our guidebooks described the sealion as "the golden retriever of the sea" and they were right on. They are the cutest, entertaining animals, we just loved them.

San Christobal Island

San Cristobal, Galapagos

The hotel we stayed in was rustic and pretty, there were many winding staircases, that led to private knooks and overlook points. We had a great view of the town. The town was easy to navigate and our guide gave us the lowdown on places to have dinner.

We took a small boat to the residential side of the island, where we saw numerous marine iguanas. We sea kayaked off the beach of the Finch Bay hotel. It's a beautiful beach, and the sea kayaking was easy in the calm waters. We weaved into a section of water that was blocked by large rocks, and we saw and old sunken shrimp and many many seabirds: bluefooted boobies, pelicans, cranes. We had lunch poolside at the Finchbay hotel and an blue heron was sunning himself on one of the lawn chairs, and three cute little ducks were playing in the pool.

Isabela island

Isabela, Galapagos

We took a boat from San Cristobal to Isabela island, and what a beautiful ride. Our guides pointed out islands that are only for the animals and motored by these slowly, where we saw many many sea lions, sleeping and sunbathing on the beach.

When we got to Isabela island, as we walked off the pier, we saw sea lions sleeping on tied off boats. And young sea lion pups playing with extra rope dangling in the water. They love to play and are very curious.

Our hotel was located just across from the pier, so we were awoken early in the morning by sealions calling to each other, it was pretty cool.

This island also has a beach just for the sealions, there was a boardwalk with handrails to keep the humans in their place. But this didn't stop a big male sealion from waddling up on the boardwalk. It was unreal, walking a few blocks from our hotel to get something to eat and sea a huge beach filled with sealions who themselves were turning in for the night. Large and small, it was such an unusual experience. We just felt like the luckiest people in the world.

Isabela, Galapagos

We hiked a great deal today, and through a lot of different terrain. The diversity of ecosystems in the Galapagos is not to be underestimated. At times we felt like we were almost on another planet, like mars, walking through (or next to) lava rock, and black deserts. On one side of the island you will have a beautiful white beach, and then on the other it's rock and much more desert like, with cactus instead of palm trees.

Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos

We flew in a a very tiny airplane to get to our last and more remote island of Santa Cruz. There were maybe 9 passengers on the flight. Again the views and landscapes of the Galapagos are breathtaking, it truelly is pristine. And hopefully through responsible tourism we can preserve it.

Santa Cruz was the most remote, with beautiful beaches and a nice sitting area in the back of the hotel, where we lounged and read books from their collection. This also housed tortoise reserves, where we could see more tortoises, and learn more about what they are doing to help preserve and maintain the tortoises of the galapagos.

Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos

Our last day we drove up to the mountains to take a horseback guided tour of the rims of (active) volcanos. Again, this was where we felt like we could be on Mars or some other planet. And since we were in the mountains (and riding horses) it helped to where layers, and have a rain jacket, and jeans (or long pants).

We saw a Galapagos hawk, grasshopper, and more birds, etc. And got to feel the steam coming from the ground from the volcanoes.

Quito

Quito, Ecuador

Back to the hotel del Eugenia, one tip is that the clothes that we needed for the Amazon were not necessarily the clothes needed for the Galapagos, and since we were staying at the same hotel (both coming and going) we could have left a bag or two at the hotel and just picked them up on this last day.

Again, Quito was an intriguing city in it's own right, and we never did get to go to the actual equator line...but I guess there's always more trips to take, and places to see. Enjoy!

Baltimore, Maryland

New York

Although we now live in New York city, we are both originally from Baltimore, and since we got married just outside of Baltimore. That's where we flew in from. Our flights from Baltimore had one stop over, I believe in Texas, but overall the getting to and from was pretty easy.
