By : Lynessa Nelson
Trip Begins May 7, 2011
Trip Ends May 21, 2011

This spring my husband and I set off to explore Belize on our custom "Adventure's in Paradise" Tour. We began by relaxing on the beach in Ambergris. Then we were on to a luxurious stay at Hamanasi Dive Resort to swim with the sea creatures that abound. Finally we ended our Belize tour at Pooks Hill Jungle Lodge with excursions to the ATM Cave and the magical Mayan ruins that surround the area. All around it was a relaxing and beautiful trip to Belize with Adventure Life.

We arrived!

Belize City, Belize

It is such a relief to arrive into Belize City without a hangup on our international flights! Every time I've traveled in the last seven years internationally, there has been some sort of delay or malfunction. Besides our seven hour layover in Salt Lake, it was a smooth ride!

We stepped off the plane, down the stairs, and onto the tarmac, a wave of warm air hitting and welcoming us at the same time. Immigration and customs were a breeze. There was already an air of calm and relaxation as travelers grabbed drinks and food before taking off in the tiny puddle-jumper planes for Ambergris Caye. They boarded the plane according to weight and three of us ladies were smushed together in the back bench seat by the tail. We decided to take it as a compliment.

In San Pedro, we were greeted by a representative from Victoria House and whisked away in a golf cart down the road to the hotel. After checking in, they gave us an introduction to the lay of the land. Then we got busy. . . doing nothing! We lay on the beach and soaked in the long forgotten sun, having come from the rain, snow and sleet of Montana springtime.

That evening we walked down the road to Pepperoni's Pizza, hidden on the side of the road about a 15 minute walk up the road from the hotel. They had a nice, basic outdoor seating area with wooden benches. It was the best pizza Matt had in a long time he said. Halfway through the meal I noticed that my legs were itching and being bitten by bugs or mosquitos or sometime. I had about ten or more bites that swelled to dime-size red bumps, but it was a small price to pay for being in paradise.

Island Time

San Pedro, Ambergris, Belize

So I promised myself to wake up this morning at six in order to make up for going to bed at 9pm. Eleven hours later, we finally awoke at 8am and headed down to breakfast. I think we may have needed the rest because we only slept for 30 minutes here and there on the redeye flight yesterday. Nine didn't seem so early either when it gets dark between six and seven.

The continental breakfast was simple but so good - toast or fresh baked muffins with fresh squeezed juice and coffee. Then we hopped on one of the shuttles into town to explore a little. Funny thing was that we didn't see as many people as we expected. It was hot out and we realized that at this time of day before noon most people were out on excursions in the water or smart enough to stay in the shade.

Back at Victoria House, we ate lunch and relaxed again in the sun. It was nice to see that there was such a variety of patrons at the hotel - newlyweds, older couples, young families, single travelers, a group for a family reunion, and Gene Simmons with the lovely Shannon Tweed. He waved to us all and bid us a good day as they carried out his luggage. Excitement for the day! Back to my book and soaking in the sun on the beach.

Sea Kayaking

Victoria House, San Pedro, Ambergris

Today we relaxed again in the morning. We felt soooooo pampered by everyone at Victoria House because they waited on you hand and foot. It was interesting to chat with the staff too who gave us some of the background to the area and their own person stories.

(Side note: we noticed as we toured around more and more that everyone is connected with each other in Belize. We met several staff at the hotels we stayed at whose friend/brother/mother works at the other place we were going to next. It just seems like a very interconnected country.)

Snorkeling on a Sail Boat

Blue Tang Inn, San Pedro, Ambergris

So I'm not much of a swimmer and don't enjoy water sports as much as some people, but this morning's snorkeling tour on the Sirena Azul Sailboat was wonderful! We started out at Blue Tang and met up with three other travelers from another hotel. Two of the staff from Blue Tang took us out on the sail boat. I get seasick at the drop of a hat but the sailboat was definitely a pleasant surprise, so much smoother than the trip on a motor boats that I've taken before. The captain turned on the music and we sailed on our merry way.

Our first stop was Hol Chan Reserve and within the first ten minutes we had seen such a variety of marine life - sea turtles, bonefish, sting rays, barracudas, eels and more! I have a slight fear of fish so this was a major step for me but our guide was very attentive and checked in with me regularly to see if I was comfortable. The fish come right up to you because they are used to being feed. At our next stop to Shark Ray Alley, they swarmed around out boat and I thought I would hit one as I jumped off the side of the boat. Turns out they are pretty quick and even though it was only about 5 or 6 feet deep I didn't hit one. Our guide was hugging a nurse shark and asked if we would like to pet it. I went up and to my surprise they feel like sandpaper. One of the other travelers told me later that the rays feel smooth and slick like you'd expect - I wasn't brave enough to pet them. Matt noticed the larger sharks circling around the outside of us but they never came in - I think there was too much going on for their comfort.

So all around it was a great time. We enjoyed the calm ride back as well - sipping on a sprite and basking on the deck with the ocean waves and caribbean music in our ears.

Puddle jumping south to Hopkins

Hamanasi Resort, Hopkins

We were sad to check out of the Blue Tang because it was such a short stay and the hotel was such a nice place to relax. The staff was wonderful as well - Allen and Fanny in the office were excellent and helped us with all our questions.

We went into San Pedro to a Cuban coffee shop. Excellent espresso and breakfast. Right before we left for the airport, we went to get pupusas from Wuranga's - which was recommended to us by Manuel at Victoria House. Unfortunately, it was closed but the pupuseria across the street was open so we pick some up there.

Everything in San Pedro is very close. It was about a ten minute walk from there to Blue Tang and then a 5 minute taxi ride from there to the airport, which is right in town as well.

Then we began the puddle jumping from Ambergris to Belize International Airport then to the Belize City Municipal Airport and on finally to Hopkins where our transfer to Hamanasi was waiting.
