¡Llegué en La Paz esta noche! ¡Estaba muy felíz! Había mucha actividad en la ciudad, pero tenía que dormir porque tenía sueño.
TRANSLATION: I arrived in La Paz this evening! I was very happy! There was a lot of activity in the city, but I had to go to sleep because I was tired.
Esta mañana volé de La Paz hasta Rurrenabaque, el pueblo en el Rio Beni, para ir al Ecolodge Chalalán en el Parque Nacional Madidi, donde pasaré 4 días. A mi me gustó ir en el avion pequeño con helices. (Nadie podia levantarse porque el cielo fue muy bajo.) Llegué en Rurrenabaque y caminé en todas las partes. ¡Hablé español todo el tiempo!
TRANSLATION: This morning I flew from La Paz to Rurrenabaque, the town on the River Beni, in order to go to the Ecolodge Chalalán in the Madidi National Park, where I’ll be for 4 days. I liked going in the little airplane with propellers. I walked around Rurrenabaque and spoke Spanish the whole time.
El hombre que me dijo que me recogería para ir al rio para ir en la canoa al Chalalán no vino. Un hombre que trabajaba en el hotel me dijo que el me conduciría al rio, pero su coche no funcionó. ¡Por lo tanto fui en su moto detrás de él y otro hombre puso mi equipaje en el frente de su moto! ¡A mi me gustó esta experienica muchísima! Necesité una foto de mi transporte y lo tengo.
Había 5 turistas, nuestro guía, y dos hombres que manejaban en el bote. La corriente en el rio era muy rápida y en la dirreción opuesta que íbámos. Por lo tanto, 3 hombres (el piloto y el otro que trabajó en el bote y un turista) fueron en el rio para empujar el bote más de 10 veces. ¡Usaron todos de sus músculos! Pareció muy difícil. Pasabamos casi 8 horas para llegar a Chalalán. Paramos 2 veces, una vez para almorzar y otra para pescar. Uno de los pilotos atrapó un bagre muy grande. ¡Más or menos de 80 libras!
Llegamos y caminamos media hora hasta Chalalán. Es un lugar muy especial—rústico, con sonidos de los pájaros, un lago bonito, reds contra de los mosquitos alrededor de las camas, hamacas cerca de cada habitación, y más. Almorzamos de nuevo y entonces fuimos en un bote para buscar monos que vimos, por supuesto. Después de cenar, caminé con 2 otros personas y nuestro guía, Richard, para explorar la selva. Vimos muchos animales y plantas muy interestantes—arañas, telarañas grandes (telaraña es una palabra nueva para mi que a mi me gusta!) las hormigas que cortan las hojas y les traen en sus espaldas, tarantulas inmaturas. Oimos los sonidos de los sapos y Richard nos dijo que cuando estamos cerca del rio y podemos oir los sapos en la noche tenemos que cuidarnos de las serpientes venomosas. No vimos ningunas serpientes, pero vimos la piel larga de una serpiente.
TRANSLATION: The man who was supposed to meet me at the hotel to take me to the motorized canoe to get to Chalalán didn’t come. A man from the hotel said that he would drive me there, but after trying to start his car & with 2 other men attempting to help him, getting there by car wasn’t going to happen, so I went a better way: on the back of a motorcycle of someone who works at the hotel & my duffel bag on the handle bars of another motorcyclist. Loved it! Had to document this so did get a photo.
There were 5 tourists on the boat, our guide, & 2 men who navigated it. The river’s current was very strong, but in the opposite direction that we were traveling & due to the fact that it was the dry season, the water level was low. As a result, we got stuck many times (at least 10, if not more) requiring the man at the bow, the man at the stern & 1 passenger to get out & push with all their might to get us unstuck. It took >8 hours to reach our destination, but was wonderful. We stopped twice: once to eat lunch & once to fish. The man at the stern caught 1 of the biggest fish I’ve ever seen—a catfish that they estimated weighed > 80 pounds.
After a ½ hour trek to the ecolodge, a beautiful place—very rustic, with sounds of birds, a beautiful pristine lake, mosquito nets around the beds, hammocks near each cabin, and more. Had a 2nd lunch & then went in a small row boat to look for monkeys, which of course we saw. Cute! After dinner we went for a walk in the jungle. We saw every kind of insect imaginable, including the heavily weighted down leaf-cutter ants, carrying large chunks of leaves on their backs, a huge spider making an incredible web (I love the word spider web in Spanish: telaraña [tela=thread & araña=spider]. My Spanish vocabulary keeps growing!!), immature tarantulas (as opposed to mature ones, no thank you!), etc. When we heard the frogs croaking, our guide, Richard, said to be careful because when you hear them at night & you’re near water, there are probably venomous snakes around. It was fine with me that we didn’t see any snakes, but we did find a long, wide snake skin on a log.
Caminamos casi todo el día hoy. Estoy fascinada con el hecho que todo está relacionada al uno al otro. Supe antes, pero para ver esto con mis ojos es un regalo. Los árboles, las plantas, los insectos, los pájaros, las flores—todos crecen porque trabajan juntos. Nosotros nos necesitamos al uno al otro, pero es muy fácil de olvidar. Los indígenos saben y pueden vivir sin la tecnología y parecen de tener más respecto de la naturaleza que el resto del mundo. (No digo que tienen una vida fácil, pero hay veces cuando pienso que una vida menos complicada es mejor, pero no sé.)
Nadé en el lago. Tuve que bañarme antes porque nadie puede entrar el lago con crema por el sol o la pulverización contra los insectos para proteger el lago.
En la noche fuimos en una canoa para buscar caimanes y vimos unos, pero solo vi un ojo de cado uno porque tienen sus ojos en cada lado de sus cabezas.
TRANSLATION: Hiked much of the day in the rainforest. It is so amazing how every living is so interconnected with everything else. I knew this before, but seeing this with my own eyes is a gift. The trees, the plants, the insects, birds, animals, flowers, all flourish because they each do their job. We really all need each other on this planet. The indigenous people know so much and can live off the land without the technology that the rest of us have. We could learn so much from their profound respect for nature. (I’m not saying that they have an easy life. Quite the contrary, but perhaps a less complicated life is a better one. I don’t know.)
Swam in the beautiful, pristine lake. No bug spray or sunscreen allowed in or near the lake or on any person using it. Makes sense!
In the evening went in a canoe to look for caimans (alligators) & of course saw several. Since their eyes are on the sides of their heads, you can only see 1 eye, that’s kind of florescent, looking at you.
Porque mis compañeros se fueron, pasé el resto de mi tiempo en Chalalán con Richard, mi guía. Hablabamos español. Pasamos todo el día en la selva. Vimos chanchos negros, pájaros amarillos que estaban comiendo con mucho ruido. Nadamos en un rio donde estaba demasiados mosquitos, pero no importa.
En la noche, después de comer el bagre que el hombre de mi canoa había atrapado el lunes, escuché a música tradicional, bailé y aprendí más de la cultura indigena que estába muy interesante.
TRANSLATION: The people with whom I had been hiking with, the only other Americans I encountered the whole time in Bolivia, left this morning. Therefore, I had the whole day alone with our guide. Hiked the whole day. Swam in a lovely river where I was practically eaten alive by mosquitoes and sand flies. Saw large black wild pigs, yellow birds that were loudly eating nuts.
That night, after eating the catfish that had been caught on the river by 1 of the men navigating our canoe to the ecolodge, listened to traditional music, danced, & learned a little more about the indigenous culture. Very interesting.
Estaba triste esta mañana porque tuve que salir de Chalalán. Me causó una buena impression de la vida de los indigenos, su pasión y respeto de la naturaleza. Regresé a Rurrenabaque en menos tiempo que necesité para llegar porque la corriente estaba con nosotros. Volé a La Paz que está un mondo completement diferente. Es una ciudad grande con mucha actividad. ¡Comí llama por la cena, que a mi me gustó!
TRANSLATION: Teary this morning because my time in Chalalán came to an end. Hard to explain my emotions, but suffice it to say that Chalalán is a special place with amazing beauty, which is allowed to exists because of the deep respect, appreciation, and love by the people who live here. Returned to Rurrenabaque by motorized canoe again & then to La Paz by another little plane. La Paz is a whole different world from the rain forest. Got right into the swing of things though and walked around, exploring, speaking Spanish and getting another taste of life in Bolivia. Had llama for dinner! A first & quite good!!
Fui con mi guía, Marco Antonio, a Copacabana y últimamente a Isla del Sol. Estabamos en coche por 3 horas y media, pero a mi me gustó porque ví muchas cosas interesantes como el paisaje, burros, chonchos, personas con ropa tradicional, e escuché a música de latinoamerica en el coche y hablé español también. Tuvimos que cruzar el Lago Titicaca, un lago muy bonito, en una barca de pasaje. Estaba muy pequeño porque solo podía transportar 2 coches. Caminé en Copacabana y fuimos en un barco para ir a Isla del Sol. Caminé Isla del Sol y subí hasta el Ecolodge Estancia. ¡La vista estaba magnífica! Vi ruinas, y muchas mujeres con muchas cosas en sus espaldas. Tienen vidas difíciles. No hay vehículos, solo animales como burros, caballos y personas que caminan.
TRANSLATION: I went with my guide, Marco Antonio, to Copacabana & ultimately to Isla del Sol. We went by car for about 3 ½ hours, but I really liked it because I saw the countryside, pigs, donkeys, people dressed in traditional clothing, listened to Latin American music, & was able to talk in Spanish. What could be better? We crossed beautiful Lake Titicaca in a small ferry boat, that could only hold 2 vehicles, walked around Copacabana, & took another boat to Isla del Sol, where we explored some more, including visiting ruins, and climbing to Ecolodge Estancia. Beautiful views! There are no vehicles on Isla del Sol. People walk on pathways carrying things on their backs, plus there are pack animals like donkeys & horses that carry things. Life appears to be quite difficult.
Caminé más en Isla del Sol. Es como otro mondo. Vi más mujeres caminando con sus animals y cosas que parecían muy pesadas en sus espaldas. Vi una mujer que golpió a su chancho con un palo porque él quiso descansar, pero sus burros continuaron de caminar.
Bajamos una ruta muy inclinada, hasta el bote para cruzar Lago Titicaca y regresar a La Paz. Vi más cosas interestantes, como colinas pequeñas de heno para secar frijoles favas y papas secando en el sol. Cuando estaba en el coche, vimos una fiesta en la calle de muchas personas bailando. Ellos vistieron ropa muy interesante en colores brillantes con muchos detalles. Habían hombres que tocaron instrumentos musicales.
TRANSLATION: Walked around Isla del Sol in the morning. It’s like another world. I imagine few places have indoor plumbing or electricity. I saw many women walking with their animals, carrying things, like sticks, on their backs. One woman was with several donkeys and a pig that wanted to rest but the donkeys kept on going. She yelled at and whacked the pig with a stick to get it to move.
We descended to get to the boat to cross Lake Titicaca in order to return to La Paz. I saw fava beans drying under little hills of hay & potatoes drying in the sun. On the ride back to La Paz there was a party in the street of people dancing in magnificent, bright colored clothing. Men played musical instruments to accompany the dancers.
Fui a las ruinas to Tiwanaku. Muy interesante. Vivieron en el año 600 antes de Jesús Cristo, antes de los Incas. Tuvieron una influencia a otros paises y civilazaciónes. La construcción de sus lugares sagrados es buenísima con piedras y rocas grandes. Nadie sabe como ellos lo hicieron.
Regresamos a La Paz, pero tuvimos que parar 2 veces para observar 2 fiestas diferentes en la calle. Había más mujeres en ropa tradicional que era muy bonita. Fuimos a la Valle de la Luna que es un lugar de geografía extraño. Parecía como la luna. Fuimos a la Iglesia de San Francisco que es muy vieja y la Plaza Murillo. La historia de La Paz es muy interesante.
No quise salir de este pais y espero que un día pueda regresar.
TRANSLATION: I went to the Tiwanaku ruins. Very interesting. They lived in 600 B.C., before the Incas. They had a significant influence on other countries & civilizations. The construction of their sacred places is beautiful, with huge rocks and stones. No one knows how they did it.
We returned to La Paz, but stopped 2 times to observe 2 different parties in the street with women dressed in traditional clothes. We went to the Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon) that is a geographic wonder, which looks like the moon. Visited a very old church, la Iglesia de San Francisco & the Plaza Murillo. The history of La Paz is very interesting.
I did not want to leave Bolivia and hope to return some day.
