December 21st, 2008--Nashville, Tennessee to Santiago, Chile

Sharon--
The Adventure Life begins again!
Meyers and I are off on another life-changing adventure and we are way excited. Unfortunately, I am 3 weeks post-surgery and a tiny bit grumpy but that is not going to stop me :-)
Over the past several days, Meyers and I have reconnected after several months apart. We have been reminiscing about our AL 8-day Galapagos excursion--our run-in with bad tuna sandwiches, the 'Poison Apple Tree', and our lost luggage. With extra carry-ons we begin our trip...there is no way we are going without a clean pair of underwear again!! Last time I purchased the only set available on San Cristobal Island--quite the adventure trying to find those! So we set out on an overcast and cold Nashville day to spend Christmas on Easter Island.
After our Galapagos trip, I jetted off to Bangkok for a little soul searching. Without my Meyers for several months, I couldn't wait to be back traveling with my #1 favorite globetrotter, My Survivorman!

December 22, 2008--Santiago, Chile

Santiago, Chile

Meyers--
Looooong plane ride overnight and a long travel day but we are finally in Chile!! Pretty beat but Adventure Life was right on time for our hotel transfer. Arrived at the hotel and crashed on the couch for three hours. Sharon said I snored so loud that people kept coming down the stairs and around the corner to see what the heck was making the horrific noise! Too funny!
Room was ready around 2pm--2 nice hot showers, yay! Sharon was not feeling so well today so I went on a short excursion to watch the sun go down over Santiago. Out for dinner to the 'World Famous' Phone Box Pub--great food and EXCELLENT Chilean wine!! We are ecstatic to be here!!
Hitting the sack for our early morning--AL picking us up at 6 :-) Way excited!

December 23, 2008--Santiago to Easter Island

Easter Island, Chile

Meyers--
Slept great-Early wake-up this morning. Probably woke up the entire 'Petite Hotel' with the creaking floors--had a great laugh! Off to airport and Easter Island. We are very excited! Sharon is feeling revitalized after Starbucks.
Arrived on Easter Island at 1pm. Freider, our local guide, came to pick us up--seems like a great guy. As soon as we get off the plane it begins to downpour-enjoy our first hour admiring the awesome rainstorm from our hotel patio. Rain stops-we hit the trail for the next 6 hours of hiking and pics. Have to see the Moai statues!
Way impressive! Really beautiful and an amazing sight...to believe that a culture could create such intricate art and village structures so long ago.
Made a new friend (a pregnant dog Sharon so fondly called 'Lilly'.) Found a killer ice cream and coffee shop...our first taste of papaya ice cream-addictive! Sharon recognized La Taverne du Pecheur from our travel guide so we dined at this lovely little restaurant on the harbour at Plaza Hotamatua. Had unbelievable lobster, tuna, and Chilean wine. Made reservations for Xmas Eve and Day. Should be nice!
Oh yeah, Sharon is burned and looks like a striped tomato at this point! South Pacific sun is WAY brutal. Cold shower and lotion for her! A real trooper :-) Full day tomorrow with Freider!

December 24, 2008--MERRY CHRISTMAS EVE Easter Island!!

Easter Island, Chile

Sharon & Meyers--
Happy Xmas Eve!!
Back from our full day excursion with Freider waiting for our next great meal at the seafood joint. Watching the waves crash on the rocks, breeze blowing, the smell of the ocean-breath-taking. The sun is preparing to hide away, spilling its last few rays on the crystal clear water. So quiet and peaceful. What a way to wind down the day.
Freider was at our hotel (Hotel Gomero) to pick us up at 9:30. We drove to Tahai and Ana Kakenga, where we learned a bit about where we ventured to yesterday. This area was refurbed in the 1960's..discussed the Polynesian influence in the Rapa Nui culture. Amazed at how knowledgeable Freider is! Our conversations are AWESOME! Being in love with all things ancient and rocky...I'm in heaven!
Continued on to Hanga Poukura and all the way to the Moai Quarry, the birthplace of the statues. They were carved out of the mountainside and only once they were placed on the Ahu (ceremonial platform) did the artists give them the gift of sight.
The quarry was so awe-inspiring-the statues from almost complete and ready to move, to just being started. Reminded me of a ghost town--a civilizations buried by time and according to Freider even ignored by some explorers. Very emotional and spiritual place--nothing had really changed since the mines were abandoned hundreds of years ago. It gave me a much better appreciation of the pure love the Rapa Nui had for their people and respect they paid them upon their death. Something to be appreciated about the way this culture loved their people.
After exploring the Quarry and a great hike, we had lunch and headed to Tongariki. Tongariki is the home of the largest set of standing Moai. 15 in all, they have weathered the test of time. They were knocked down by the tsunami of the 1980's...unfortunately the relics and broken Moai were scattered inland. They found bones and broken Moai for miles inland after the 9+ earthquake that struck the South Pacific. Sad, sad day.
Easter Island sits alone on the Easter Island tectonic plate and is often referred to as Te Pito O Te Henua or 'The Naval of the World'. There is a spot marked by a magnetic, round stone...many believe to have mystical and healing powers. When your hand is placed on it, it feels as if the heat from the rock is being transfered into your body--Meyers thought this was way cool :-)
We then headed to the beach!! Anakena--one of the prettiest places in the entire world! I was very excited to jump into the cool, clear water. Meyers, being afraid of ocean-life is always a bit more leary about jumping into the ocean...BUT HE DID IT! After a few hours of blistering in the sun, we snagged a Fanta and headed back to the hotel after a full day excursion. We prepped for our Xmas Eve dinner and headed into town.

Dinner was incredible (again by our new pal Pasquet, the Self-Proclaimed Norman Viking!) After dinner we sat out on the Plaza Hotamatua with all the dogs. Sharon let one of the street dogs lick her and I caught a great pic! Most importantly, we exchanged our rings and made a promise to be with each other forever..through whatever comes in life. There was no better place in the entire world to do this...we talked about our life together. Simplicity, challenges, child, and travel. It was very emotional for both of us. Who knows where our life journey and adventure will take us but we will be together and that's what counts :-) I can see it being simple, yet full of travel and exploration. My best friend and partner for always. That's a very beautiful thing. PERFECT DAY!!
Oh, and our new pal the black lab ran off with the Tiffany ring bag and wouldn't give it back! Great pics and even greater laughter!!

December 25, 2008--MERRY CHRISTMAS Easter Island!!

Easter Island, Chile

Meyers & Sharon--
Merry Xmas!!
The church was beautiful last night! Sharon and I went to the courtyard, knelt and prayed. Each his/her own prayers. Was special for me. I asked God to bless us and watch over us all our lives. I asked for peace, joy and simplicity.
Slept in after our long night then headed into town for a Christmas lunch. Low key morning and now off to Vaitea, Puna Rau, Ahu Akivi, Ane Te Panu, Ahu Tepeu, and CAVES!!
Sharon LOVES caves but she got a scrape leaving the last cave. They sure were amazing though! We also saw the northwest coastline which was really stunning. Lava rock, high cliffs, and the clearest, blue water you have ever seen in your life. The sight was a view of a lifetime. Something you will never forget. Sharon caught my picture there...I am sure I will look at this one alot..great to share that moment and pure beauty together.
At Ahu Akivi we saw the only statues that face the sea. Again, speculation why but no definitive proof. That is the consistent theme of Easter Island....a pure mystery to the world still which makes it a very magical place.
Another great day and off to our favorite spot for dinner. Have to put some medicine and bandage on Sharon's 'Cave Wound' :-)

We met our new pals Heather and London, from New York and Montana at La Taverne for our Christmas dinner. It was packed as usual and we enjoyed appetizers and a shared meal this time! Sharon's king crab and avocado salad was bigger than her head! We left and were followed home by our 'Tiffany Bag Buddy' the black lab. Off to bed!!

December 26, 2008--Easter Island

Easter Island, Chile

Sharon & Meyers--
Woke up with big post-xmas headaches..quite dehydrated. Freider picked us up and we gave him a little Christmas gift and am exceptional evaluation. He was the PERFECT guide for us. Full of information, and extremely passionate about the Rapa Nui culture and the island. He continually asked tourists to stay off of the ruins and not to touch anything. His respect and passion for the architecture and nature of the island was definately eye opening and I had deep respect for this. He loves what he does and he made our trip even more exciting!
First we went to the northern side of Rano Kau crater where we peered into the ancient volcano. What a sight!! We continued on to Orongo where we learned about the Birdman and how this individual was chosen. It was unreal how men descended the side of the crater, swam over a mile to the island of Moto Nui and stayed several days to retrieve an egg from the nesting birds. Once the man found an egg, his competitor became his protectors and he swam all the way back to Easter Island with the egg strapped to his forehead in a little pouch. This man was celebrated by the creation of a petroglyph in the stones on the cliff above the three tiny islands. Absolutely amazing!!
We then headed down and went to Ana Kai Tangata, where paintings of the Birdman and other can be seen on the cave ceilings. Some say this cave could have been used as a cook house for the competitors in the race for the egg. The paintings were amazing! We then climbed back up to the top of the cliff and watched tropical fish feast on 4 day old Chilean bread :-)
Off to the gardens where students and Park Rangers grow plants that were found hundreds of years ago as staples in the Rapa Nui culture...taro root, sugar cane, sweet potatoes, which are all still served on the dinner plate.
We then got a bird's eye glimpse at the phenomenal runway that was built as an emergency landing spot for the Space Shuttle...very neat!!
Freider then took us to a car rental place where we rented a Quad (4-wheeler) and headed back to Anakena--our new favorite beach! The 4-wheeler was awesome and a great way to see the island! So much fun..although you had to watch out for crossing horses and cows!!
Saying good-bye to our newest friend and great guide was sad but will become Facebook buddies when we get home. Made a life-long pal and very much appreciated his dedication to showing us who the Rapa Nui were and still are.

Stayed at Anakena about 4 hours, which ended up being 2 hours too long! Meyers mistakingly thought his Burt's Bees had sun screen in it and now his bottom lip is toast! He literally COOKED himself! Okay, not funny :-(
The beach and ocean were alot of fun..great sun and deserted at first...beautiful blue ocean. Impressive! Hung out at the beach and had a lunch of Escudo and banana bread, the lunch of champions!
Drove the 4 wheeler back along the inland road (18 km to town) which was nice and cool. Headed straight to the artist's market and cultural center, picked up a few souvenirs for us and family. Then to the empanada stand..finally!! They were delicious...almost as delicious as our ice cream for dessert. Very tired at this point. Back to hotel for showers and rest.
Sharon is way exhausted but Meyers has to get the sunset pictures in so back on the 4 wheeler to Hanga Roa. Night!!

December 27, 2008--Easter Island to Santiago

Easter Island, Chile

Sharon & Meyers--
Last morning on Easter Island..we are both very sad to leave this incredible island...we could live here :-)
We jumped on the 4 wheeler and headed into town. Filled up the tank and returned our little automobile. Ran into Freider while we were waiting for the pharmacy to open. He was on his way to meet his next couple eager to explore. Eyes started tearing up knowing we had to go :-(
Grabbed some much needed lotion for our insane sun burns. Even with 30+spf we fried. I forgot to bring the 60spf we had bought on Galapagos and I am suffering for it! Picked up some 12 hour moisture lotion that had a very funny smell to it. When applied it smelled like pork! Meyers looked and smelled like a roasted pig! Great laugh!
We had a cup of cafe at a roadside stand and admired the truck-beds full of fresh produce. The colors were spectacular. You could never even think about having fruits and vegetables like this in land-locked Tennessee...organic at its best!
Arrived at the airport pretty early and watched the plane arrive. Took some video and pics for my bro, the pilot.
Meyers, or as I now like to call him, Angelina Jolie, stayed inside to nurse his puffy smoocher. Never seen such swollen lips in my life! Lesson learned--never again will I spend time in the South American sun without the 60+spf :-)
Meyers surprised me with a couple of t-shirts (in unison, awwwwwww) and then we boarded the plane to Santiago. Stay-Puffed Marshmallow Meyers snored all the way to Santiago!

Back in Santiago and to the Villafranca Petite Hotel. Sharon's wrist was really sore so she needed to take some medicine. Went back to the Phone Box Pub for another great dinner.
Back to hotel where we shared some great laughs and memories from the Island. Another great day but we already miss Easter Island :-( We will be back soon! It's Sharon's dream to be like Pasquet the Norman Viking and own her own restaurant on a tiny island...who knows we may see you soon Easter Island!

December 28, 2008--Santiago, Chile

Santiago, Chile

Meyers--
I had the wonderful experience of waking up to Sharon picking sunburned skin from my forehead!! What a truly wonderful wakeup experience AND she wouldn't stop until her pick quota was full for the morning. Gotta love her!! It was too funny and we both laughed hysterically! I definately learned my sun screen lesson: Use it or get picked!
Left the Villafranca for a quick run to a local coffee shop to just hang out and enjoy the sights and sounds of Santiago a bit. What a nice way to wind down prior to our leaving Santiago.
Off to the airport and the chaos of international travel!
Had a pretty good lunch at the airport buffet and have to kill 5 hours...not too bad. The crowds here are pretty thick and its definately hot!
Sharon wanted her luggage wrapped in green saran wrap...quite the novelty!!
Breezed though security and customs..shopped a bit more for some Pisco for Sharon's dad. Sharon polished off the last bottle he brought back from South America and felt a little guilty!
Now on the plane heading home :-( Very sad, to say the least. Overnight to Atlanta, tired...then back to Nashville and work!! Urgh!

Santiago, Chile

MEYERS' FINAL THOUGHTS:
This has been a wonderful trip, to say the least, but a bit more expensive than I had thought. Wonderful overall! Rapa Nui is a truly magical and mysterious culture. Most likely the history and culture of the Island will never be understood fully. Shrouded by hundreds of years of hypotheses...but no definitive proof. Easter Island is a beautiful, simple place where all of the trouble of the world can be forgotten. That is indeed a very rare occurrence. I love it! Maybe this is a place you run away to...who knows.
More importantly, it is a place where Sharon and I really connected and shared together. That will always make it a very special place. Those will be lifelong memories :-)

SHARON'S FINAL THOUGHTS:
What an adventure! What made this trip to Isla de Pascuela so special to me was not only my raw passion and appreciation for ancient art and cultures but the fact that I almost DID NOT GO!! Putting all else aside, my love for all things simple prevailed :-)
I figured out life just wasn't the same without Meyers and he is who I am meant to spend my life with. This trip was a reconnaissance for me--a rebirth of our relationship and a rebirth of my love and passion for travel to extraordinary places.
These things can be easily masked by the daily hustle and bustle of American life and I truly feel grateful to the people at Adventure Life for a flawless trip. This I will never forget. This adventure incorporated ALL of my favorite things...from Geology to Archeology, to the outdoors and the supernatural...I will never forget my time spent on Isla de Pascuela.

See you on our next Adventure!! Sharon & Meyers
