Launched in 2011, the Elephant Conservation Center offers an experience for visitors to contribute to the protection of the Asian elephant. The center is run by a team of elephant specialists who have been working to protect the elephants for decades. The team takes you to the elephants so they can stay in their natural habitat. They have a elephant nursery, socialization area, hospital, museum and mahout training center.

The ECC also has accommodations which include 10 bungalows with either twin or double beds and 5 twin rooms with a dorm style traditional stilt house. The bungalows are simple traditional stilt bamboo huts that have a private balcony and a view of the Nam Tien Lake.

There is also a restaurant at the Center with traditional Lao food. It is vegetarian friendly and the dishes are prepared using fresh produce from the local market or the Center's gardens. You can also order drinks and snacks to enjoy while relaxing by the lake.

Knowing the threats to elephants, the ECC:
  1. Encourages elephant natality through their baby bonus and breeding programs
  2. Offers quality health services at the elephant hospital
  3. Implements a re-herding program for elephants (socialization area)
  4. Reconverts logging elephants and mahouts into fair, environmentally friendly ecotourism
  5. Ensures the viability of the ECC through visits on site
  6. Raises awareness about the condition of Lao elephants
The Five Freedoms
  1. Freedom from malnutrition
  2. Freedom from thermal and physical discomfort
  3. Freedom from injury or disease
  4. Freedom from fear and stress
  5. Freedom to express normal patterns of behavior

The trip might have been the absolute best of our lifetime (thus far). We particularly want to commend our guide Peter in the Guilin area-he was so incredibly attentive, energetic, enthusiastic-and absolutely dedicated to ensuring that our meals were 100% vegetarian.
