Energy Supply

About the Lodge · Energy Supply · Sustainable Design · Staying At Ecocamp · Suite Domes

Engery Supply Environmental design involves using the natural forces that are found on site:
  • Solar energy has been widely used in Patagonia especially on our summer season when the days can have 17hrs of daylight. We use solar panels to provide energy for small fans on the toilettes chutes and to light the circulation areas.
  • Wind energy is still on an experimental stage in Patagonia, our experience with two generators has been diverse and main difficulties reside on that the wind flows very irregularly with strong currents at certain hours and not a breeze in others. Nevertheless we have been able to provide lighting for dormitories out of the wind generators.
  • Propane is used for heating water and for the kitchen stove
Passive Heating and Light
The best way to conserve energy is not to have electric lighting at all and follow natural rhythms. Domes have a panoramic window and come coated with white canvas which allows plenty of sunlight inside. A thick insulation cushion minimized the exchange of temperature.

Waste Management
  • Bringing into the wilderness area as little garbage as possible by buying goods in bulk
  • Sorting and storing the waste that can be recycled
  • Reducing the organic waste by giving it to the pigs at the neighboring Estancia Las Torres
  • Taking al the waste out of the wilderness area
