Terrantai Lodge

The adobe facade of Terrantai LodgeTerrantai Lodge offers an authentic experience of the Atacama Desert in the north of Chile in all its cultural and natural splendor. The lodge opened its doors in 1996, and was conceived to honour the spirit of the traditional customs of the Atacama desert while providing the creature comforts modern travelers expect from hotels in San Pedro de Atacama Oasis.

The project was the result of the work of Matias Klotz, an internationally renowned Chilean architect, and David Barrera, owner of Terrantai. Using the skills and wisdom of their ancestors and inspired by modern creativity, the resulting Lodge is dedicated to meeting the needs of travelers while continuing to be deeply rooted in native culture.

View of the village church from inside one of the lodge's shaded guest roomsTerrantai Lodge, whose name means "People of the Earth," is situated in the heart of the village of San Pedro de Atacama, next to the village church, just steps from the craft market, and close to the small assortment of restaurants and shops that comprise San Pedro today. The Lodge has 16 rooms, all with central heating. The Lodge's corridors are made from rounded Lacustrian rocks and connect the rooms, dining room and garden. The Lodge also has a restaurant, swimming pool and telephones.

Meals at Terrantai Lodge are so delicious you will know they have been prepared with care. Breakfast consists of fresh fruits, natural juices, homemade bread and pastries. For lunch and dinner meals of traditional Andean fare are prepared with local ingredients like quinoa, maize and fresh vegetables. The sunlit, adobe-walled common room at the lodgeWines selected from world-renowned Chilean vineyards are offered to accompany meals. If the traditional choices of food do not appeal to your taste buds the Chef will happily prepare something more familiar to your palate.

Terrantai is an old house restored. This is a place where people have lived and welcomed travelers for millenniums. Terrantai was built with materials taken from earth of the surrounding desert. Using techniques developed thousands of years ago. The walls consist of individually selected stones placed with care and adobe prepared under the hot sun. The roof was preserved from the original house.

Terrantai Lodge offers both the peace and tranquility of its spaces and the possibility of watching and joining in traditional activities like dance and music. Here you are free to do as you wish: enjoy a good book from the Lodge's library, sit in the shade of the garden, or chat with fellow travelers.A stone-walled guest room at the lodge

The Atacama is an area full of tradition and ceremony, where the customs of the native people have been preserved. At the Lodge they want to share with you the history and traditions of the Atacama desert, some evenings an outside fire is lit and the locals bring out their guitars along with quenas (Indian pipes) and zamponas (panpipes) treating guests to some traditional Latin American music.
