Chirripo National Park
Chirripó National Park is located in the middle portion of the Talamanca Range of Costa Rica, approximately 30 km northeast from the city of San Isidro del General. Within the park there are various ecosystems, including Páramo, Cloud Forest and Humid Forests. The mountains were formed by a process of uplifting and shaped by glaciers in the form of a "U". Moraines, glacial terraces, lakes and cirque glaciers attest to the passing of giant tongues of ice, up to 3 km long, some 25,000 years ago.
Chirripó is one of the highest mountains in Central America, and in the upper reaches of the park, visitors enjoy mystical and changing scenery, a large quantity of glacial lakes and impressive rock formations, such as the famous Crestones.
In the upper reaches of the park there are 5 points of interest of great geological, biological and scenic beauty: the Savanna of Lions, the Valley of Rabbits, Mount Chirripó, Valley of the Moraines, and the Valley of Lakes. In the latter, find Lake San Juan, where sediments discovered at the bottom have been dated to 4000 years and demonstrate the presence of fires from remote times, whether of natural cause or from our human ancestors has yet to be determined. The headwaters of the Chirripó Pacífico River begin here at Lake San Juan and cascade thru canyons and forests before passing thru San Gerardo de Rivas.
