Bottom Line: Visit between May and October - The best time to see Namibia’s wildlife on a safari is from May to October (during the dry season). During the dry season, the best months to visit are June through September when it’s a moderate 73.4℉/23℃
Quick facts:
  • Dry Season: May-October (Winter)
  • Wet Season: October-April (Summer)
  • High tourism season: July-October
  • Low tourism season: December-April
  • Hottest months: November-February
  • Great weather: April-May (little rainfall, lush green landscapes, moderate temperatures)
West of Botswana on the Atlantic Coast of Africa, Namibia can be a great country to visit at any time of the year depending on where your destination is. Generally, Namibia receives much less rain than its neighboring countries to the east, which is a huge advantage while traveling - especially during safaris as they can sometimes get canceled or delayed due to the rain.

Why is the dry season the best time to spot animals?
In addition to the bright, sunny days and clear skies, the most compelling reason to visit Namibia during the dry season is the fact that there is far less vegetation, which drives most of the animals to congregate around water holes making them very easy to spot and track!

If you’re traveling during the dry season, make sure to pack warm clothes for early morning game drives, which can be quite chilly.

Won’t the parks be crowded?
Although the summer months are the high season for tourism in Namibia and crowded parks might be a worry to some, this probably won’t affect your wildlife viewing experience. Generally, the safari guides plan their trips so groups won’t run into each other and instead can focus on the natural beauty around them.

If you’re planning a safari in expansive Etosha National Park, avoid the months of October through March (especially from
December to March)
, as it will be considerably harder to spot wildlife and extremely hot temperatures make it fairly less comfortable. Note, however, that these African summer months are a great time to visit the Skeleton Coast National Park (though the dry African winter months are also a reasonable time to visit if you want to combine a trip here with a safari).

The best time to visit breathtaking Sossusvlei is between March until May or, much like Etosha, between August and October. During both of these gorgeous periods of time, the cool air offers amazingly clear skies, more mild temperatures with little-to-no rain, and ideal photo opportunities. Additionally, between August and October, it’s the dry season so animals will be easier to spot!
