Peru Earthquake: Update

Thank you to everyone who has expressed concern about the earthquake that rocked Peru's south-central coast last week. Adventure Life has a special connection with Peru and its people, and like many of you, we felt personally troubled by news of the earthquake. Our friends and affiliates in Peru have been on our minds, and we are grateful for all the hard work of our staff and guides who - as always - went above and beyond to take excellent care of our travelers.

The areas of Pisco, Paracas and Ica were hit the hardest. The major tourism infrastructures of Machu Picchu, Cusco, Lake Titicaca region, Northern Peru, and the Amazon are outside of the affected areas and are operating as normal. Lima, 186 miles (300 km) north of Ica, experienced restrained shocks from the earthquake, but avoided the intense magnitude that devastated other regions. Lima is operating as normal. Pisco and Ica are slowly recovering, but are facing struggles and challenges as focus turns to the survivors and rebuilding. In some locations between 70-100% of the urban infrastructure was damaged, including homes, hospitals, power stations, water supplies and communication systems.

The BBC, CNN and Time are keeping updated coverage on the story. We invite you to visit their websites and learn more about the 8.0 magnitude earthquake that killed 503 people, injured 1,042, and left over 100,000 homeless.

Can I Help?

Food and water are in great need - the easiest way to help with this demand is to contribute to a reputable non-profit such as the Red Cross, UNICEF, or CARE, experienced organizations that already have people onsite and working hard to make an effective difference.

Donations are also being accepted through Caritas.Transfer information is below:

Bank: Credit Union of Miami - United States
Account: 201030010003521 (Dollars)
ABA: 067015355
SWIFT: BCPLUS33
Name: Caritas of Peru, Earthquake Emergency Ica and Cañete

Or donations can be made to the local Caritas branch in Peru:

Bank: Credit Union of Peru
Address: Calle Centenario 156 La Molina - Lima Perú
Account: 193-1586951-1-16 (Dollars)
SWIFT: BCPLPEPL
Name: Caritas of Peru

In addition, Adventure Life invites our travelers preparing to visit Peru to pack a few extra supplies for victims of the earthquake. These supplies can simply be left in storage at your Lima hotel - our local affiliate will pick up the donations and deliver items to appropriate parties. Items of particular need include: blankets, clothing, sheets, towels, soap, tents and sleeping bags.

Thank you.
