Explore the stunning fjords of Norway on this 7-day expedition cruise. The MS Vesteralen begins in Bergen and makes its way north, cruising through remote fjords, stopping in pristine coastal villages, and navigating to off-the-beaten-path destinations. Adventure awaits as you sail to Trondheim, cross the Arctic Circle, and continue your way to the northernmost tip of the European continent.
Day 1 : Embark in Bergen Day 2 : Alesund and Geirangerfjord Day 3 : Trondheim Day 4 : Arctic Circle and Lofoten Islands Day 5 : Tromso, Gateway to the Arctic Day 6 : Honningsvag and the North Cape Day 7 : Kirkenes
Founded in 1070, the vibrant city of Bergen has retained a great deal of local character and history. Explore this cultural gateway to the fjords and spend some time in one of the outdoor cafes and restaurants before boarding the MS Vesteralen. Settle in to your cabin as the ship begins its voyage north.
Sail north to Ålesund, a beautiful town renowned for its Art Nouveau architecture. Set course into the spectacular UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord, where you can enjoy a scenic excursion which includes a breath-taking drive down the winding Trollstigen Pass.
The architecture and surroundings in Trondheim create a beautiful setting for any outing, whether as part of a guided tour in Nidaros Cathedral or a casual stroll through the Bakkland district. In the evening, continue to the Land of the Midnight Sun.
Cross the Arctic Circle and arrive in Ørnes. The Arctic Circle marks the southern extremity of the polar, 24-hour sunlit day - often referred to as the 'Midnight Sun.' In the evening, reach Svolvær, the picturesque capital of the Lofoten Islands. These islands are renowned for their small fishing villages with their Bohemian atmosphere, surrounded by majestic granite cliffs and white sandy beaches. Complete your visit with a stroll between the stock-fish racks and 'rorbuer,' the traditional red fishermen's residences.
During the night, pass the magnificent Trollfjord and sail through the narrow Raftsund strait. Admire the rugged mountainous landscape which juts up against the horizon under the endless sun. Continue to Tromsø, a city with many lively restaurants and cafés.
Arrive in Honningsvåg, the starting point of an optional excursion to the spectacular North Cape, the northernmost point of mainland Europe. From the fishing village of Kjøllefjord, get a 'Taste of Lapland' by meeting a Sámi family.
Day 7 Kirkenes
The vistas and sea life become more dramatic as the ship approaches Kirkenes, just a few miles from the Russian border. Enjoy breakfast on board before disembarking for your continued journey home.
The trip might have been the absolute best of our lifetime (thus far). We particularly want to commend our guide Peter in the Guilin area-he was so incredibly attentive, energetic, enthusiastic-and absolutely dedicated to ensuring that our meals were 100% vegetarian.
