Part of the Earth’s history is written in Russia. Join L’Austral to discover the origins of the world, where fire, land and the ocean have created an untamed paradise which is still free and almost forgotten. Like a jewel in its presentation case, unspoiled nature reveals its volcanoes, acid lakes, and geysers in a part of the world that is unfamiliar to the general public. The volcanic Kamchatka Peninsula offers a truly remarkable and infinitely beautiful natural experience, where the word "wild" really comes into its own.

Visit Ittygran Island, south of Arakamchechen in the Bering Sea. Beluga whales frequent this region, so be sure to keep an eye out. Your visit may also include a stop at the infamous Whale Bone Alley, where whale skulls, whale bones, and stones have been carefully arranged in long rows.

Day 5 Cap Navarin | Gravilla Bay, Russia

  • Ship
  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
Cape Navarin marks the place where the land bridge to North America began when sea levels were much lower. Strong tides around the cape have created an abundance of food, drawing numerous marine mammals and birdlife. Even gray whales are known to congregate here.

A site of regional and historical importance, today Olyutorskiy is an administrative center. In 1714, it was home to an ostrog (fortress) that controlled the coast and land route from Kamchatka to Anadyrsk. The site lost its importance after the sea route from Okhotsk was opened.

Day 9 Verkhoturova | Tymlat

Located off the Kamchatka Peninsula, the Commander Islands are the most western of the Aleutian chain. Visit the archipelago's only permanently inhabited village, Nikolskoye. Much of the remaining islands and surrounding marine areas are part of the Komandorsky Zapovednik Natural Preserve. Because of the protected areas and rich waters, the region is host to abundant wildlife including sea otters, Stellar sea lions, sperm whales, orcas, right whales, and others.

Day 11 Kronotskiy Biosphere Reserve

  • Ship
  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
Created in 1934 as a nature area reserved for scientific research, the reserve is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Home to geysers, volcanoes, as well as the largest population of protected Eurasian brown bears, the Kronotsky Reserve is a rare treat for visitors to Russia's Far East.
