Day 1: Highlands of Santa Cruz

At 8:00 AM from the Hotel Silberstein, the local guide takes the group towards the Highlands of Santa Cruz.

Driving through the rural area of the island, travelers can experience the agricultural side of the archipelago, as well as the diversity of its landscape. You will be surrounded by wild landscape and various species of the flora and fauna. It is possible to sight the finches that are famous for being the basis of Darwin´s theory of evolution. Watch the famous Galapagos land tortoises in their natural environment and learn how the private ranches aid to protect these special animals and their habitat. Listen to the sounds while they eat the leaves of trees or while they are searching for food. Tortoises of all different ages and sizes gather here - small young tortoises with shining carapaces along with older ones with cracked carapaces, which is a sign of a long life.

The well-known Lava Tunnels are another amazing experience! Formed by the lava floods of the volcanoes, they spread from the highlands down to sea level. The tunnels are collapsed in several spots, however, a track is still intact that allows a 30 minute hike. This will give you an idea of their formation. The local guide will share details and history of these tunnels.

Sunset displays the contrasts of the Island. Return to the hotel in time for dinner.

The trip might have been the absolute best of our lifetime (thus far). We particularly want to commend our guide Peter in the Guilin area-he was so incredibly attentive, energetic, enthusiastic-and absolutely dedicated to ensuring that our meals were 100% vegetarian.
