Stephen Lerner

(Professor Molchanov, Jan 2008)

A trip to Antarctica is truly a voyage of discovery, to a place that is other-worldly, yet so important for our planet. The sensory input during the trip is marvelous - seeing, hearing, and learning. The experiences that the ship and its staff afford us bring us into oceanography, marine biology, ecology, geology, glaciology, animals and their behavior, evolution. I could go on and on. The three guide staff were deeply committed personally to polar exploration and the associated disciplines, and they are highly experienced, with a total of several decades of experience in Antarctic and also Arctic. Their enthusiasm and commitment ease one quickly into a much better comprehension about facts and issues of which my knowledge had before been more sketchy.

In addition to cruising, the landings, lectures, filmed presentations, and just off-the-cuff discussions were exciting and invaluable. The Russian crew of the Russian icebreaker, the Professor Molchanov was very experienced and friendly. They delivered us to difficult areas, provided wonderful all-time access to the bridge. The ship was comfortable and cozy, and the food was surprising good and varied. One must not forget the passengers, who were extremely diverse and interesting in themselves. Of the 52 passengers, only three (including me) were from the U.S., and many countries were represented among the others. Thank you again for enhancing my planning for this fantastic trip.
