Just off the coast of Vietnam, a myriad of karstic islands are clustered in this picturesque setting. Looming out of the sea, undercut by erosions into fantastic shapes, they reminded the Vietnamese of the looping back of a swimming dragon. Scattered among them, whole communities of fishing families live most of their lives on sampans, trading among themselves and periodically going into nearby towns such as Haiphong to sell their catch and buy supplies.

Da Nang, known as Tourane by the French, succeeded Hoi An as the most important port in central Vietnam during the 19th century. Today, Da Nang's distance from other power centers, its natural endowments, (the port and proximity to Laos and Thailand), and its high degree of provincial autonomy allows for considerable local initiative. Among the Da Nang area sites of interest to visitors are the Marble Mountains, China Beach, the ancient port town of Hoi An and the imperial city of Hue.

Ho Chi Minh City covers an area of more than 800 square miles, stretching westward from the South China Sea to the Cambodian border. Its land is overwhelmingly rural, dotted with villages and clusters of houses set amidst rice paddies. The downtown section of Ho Chi Minh City is still known as Saigon, and it is here the economic changes sweeping Vietnam and their social implications are most evident. Sihanoukville, also known as Kampong Som, is located in southern Cambodia on the Gulf of Thailand, and is Cambodia's only international marine port. Its beaches are the most prominent natural feature of the city, spanning most of the surrounding coastline. Sihanoukville has several cultural sites, including Victory Monument built to symbolize friendship with Vietnam, and Independence Square, constructed in honor of independence and the Cambodians that lost their lives defending their country.

Founded as a British trading colony in 1819, Singapore joined the Malaysian Federation in 1963. Two years later, it became an independent island-state, developing into one of the world's most prosperous countries. With ultra-modern skyscrapers combined with a medley of Chinese, Indian and Malay influences, Singapore is a dynamic city rich in contrast and color, exhibiting a harmonious blend of culture, cuisine, arts and architecture.

Enjoy Kuala Lumpur's scenic highlights on this full-day excursion. Following a 90-minute drive to Kuala Lumpur,  pause to stretch your legs and snap some photos outside the regal Istana Negara -- the official residence of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (King) of Malaysia. Continue next to Independence Square, surrounded by legacies of the colonial era, including the old Municipal Building and the Royal Selangor Club. Walk to the Central Market, an art deco edifice that was once the capital's wet market. Thanks to forward-thinking bureaucrats who saved it from demolition, the market has been refurbished into a lively maze of shops and restaurants. Walkthrough Chinatown, Kuala Lumpur's oldest settlement. See the Sze Ya Temple, the oldest Taoist temple in the city. The temple boasts elaborate interiors and intricate roof ridges and was built by craftsmen from southern China. You'll also visit the lavish Mahamariamman Temple -- the oldest functioning Hindu temple in Malaysia -- featuring an ornate tower in the style of many South Indian temples. Snap some photos (from a distance) of the Petronas Towers, which soar to a vertigo-inducing 1,483 feet. Following a hearty buffet lunch visit the Royal Selangor Factory. At the ultra-modern Visitor Center, learn about the company's pioneering past and its transformation into a world-class company. At the factory, see the different pewter production processes -- casting, filing, polishing, soldering, hammering, and engraving. The tour ends at the retail store where a wide selection of Royal Selangor pewter, sterling silver, and precious jewelry can be purchased.

From the bustle of Georgetown's waterfront to the countryside of Penang, circle the island to see some of Penang's most interesting sights. A leisurely drive leads to the northern tip of the island, passing beautiful coves and bays of Batu Ferringhi. Nearby is the Batik workshop, where the intricate and timeless art of printing the cloth with wax and dyes is demonstrated. Enjoy the coastal view en route to the Butterfly Farm. This 41 x 43-meter walk-in aviary features more than 100 species of live butterflies. Feel them flutter around you and they may even land on you! It also showcases many other interesting creatures like the water dragon and giant scorpions, along with many more inhabitants of the green. The landscaped gardens also feature waterfalls, ponds, wooden bridges, and a rock tunnel. Scents of clove and nutmeg follow as you drive through the hills, stop at a local fruit and spice stall for a firsthand look at the fresh species and local fruits. See the "other side" of Penang--the tranquil Malay villages, called Kampungs, as you travel to the southern tip of the island. Along the coastal road, you will view the Penang Bridge--the fifth-longest span in the world. The coach pulls over for you to get a wide-angle view of the bridge before you return to the ship.
 

Phuket, nestled in the balmy Andaman Sea waters, lies 536 miles south of Bangkok. Initially, Phuket derived its wealth from tin and rubber and enjoyed a rich and colorful history. Located on a major trade route between India and China, Phuket is frequently mentioned in foreign traders' ship logs. Blessed with a natural heritage of stunning white-sand beaches, sapphire blue seas, exotic marine life, and lushly forested hillsides, Phuket is one of Southeast Asia's most popular destinations.

The modern history of Galle began in 1505 with the arrival of the Portuguese, who ruled until 1640 when they surrendered to the Dutch East India Company. The British took over from the Dutch in 1796. Stop for photos to see one of Sri Lanka’s most fascinating scenes, the stilt fishermen of the southern coast. The Martin Wickremasinghe Folk Museum holds more than 1,000 artifacts relating to Sri Lankan rural life. Some of the exhibits include Buddhist religious artifacts, pottery, a unique collection of masks, musical instruments, traditional lace-making, costumes, and jewelry. Next, visit Galle Fort. Enter through the old gates and drive around or walk on the ramparts, to take in the spectacular view of the Galle. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is one of the best-preserved examples of 17th-century colonial fortifications in the world. The Dutch Church is an excellent example of colonial architecture and is the oldest Protestant church still in use in Sri Lanka. Completed and consecrated in 1755, it features a floor covered by 20 heavily embossed and engraved gravestones, moved by the British into this church in 1853 from other locations. Explore the surrounding area or browse the shops displaying an interesting variety of antiques, jewelry, and handicrafts.

Leave the city behind in your search for the heart and soul of this special island -- a teardrop-shaped emerald off the coast of India. The countryside is green and lush, and tropical fruits and spices grow all around you. Travel by train into the interior to meet some rather large and extremely engaging new friends. The Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage was created to care for baby elephants found abandoned or orphaned. Approximately 80 animals are looked after here -- fed, trained, and studied by the Sri Lankan Wildlife Authority. From the knowledgeable staff at the orphanage,  learn all about the efforts being made to care for these magnificent mammals, as well as the ongoing battle for the conservation of their native habitats. On the verandah of the Pinnalanda Restaurant, relax and enjoy lunch while watching the elephants as they have their daily bath at a nearby river. After the bath and your meal are both complete, return to the orphanage.

Please note: The lunch restaurant is not air-conditioned. The elephants at Pinnawela are not tame; do not approach the animals. The train journey is approximately 150 mins in duration.

Explore the evolution of Mumbai's longstanding Jewish heritage during this memorable, half-day excursion. Depart the pier for a scenic 30-minute drive through the city, passing the Gateway of India en route. Your first stop is at the magnificent Keneseth Eliyahoo Synagogue, built in 1884 by Sir Jacob Sassoon. This splendid structure features an interior with decorated pillars and beautifully carved wooden doors. Drive past the impressive Gothic-style David Sassoon Library, constructed in 1847 and one of Mumbai's largest libraries. The next stop is the impressive Magen David Synagogue—the first Baghdadi Synagogue constructed in Mumbai and the largest synagogue in Asia. Conclude with a visit to the historic Tiphereth Synagogue, built in 1886. During the drive back to the pier, pass by the Institute of Science, designed by Sir George Wittet in 1925 and funded by Sir Jacob Sassoon. Stop for photos at the legendary and lively dhobi ghat, where you can observe clothes being washed in a time-honored manner.

Omani experience begins with an outside view of the stunning Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque -- a magnificent example of modern Islamic architecture. With its shimmering lines of white marble, five minarets, archways, and courtyards, the Grand Mosque is the pride of Muscat. Continue with a drive along the elegant Corniche, lined with old merchant's houses, en route to the enticing Muttrah souq (market). A series of small lanes and alleyways, the souq is a hub of activity where you can mingle with the locals and enjoy a hot cup of Omani tea at a café (at your own expense). Stroll past tiny shops selling old silver jewelry, rare spices from India, silks from China, sandalwood and myrrh, and the famous Omani khanjars, or daggers. Visit the Bait al Zubair Museum, housing Oman's largest and finest private collection of artifacts. Offering insight into the culture and traditions of the country, the museum has more than 5,000 specially selected pieces spanning several centuries and regions. The collection includes traditional Omani weaponry, jewelry, clothing, furniture, photographs, coins, stamps, musical instruments, manuscripts and books. Before returning to Port Qaboos, you’ll stop to snap photos at Al Alam Palace, the ceremonial palace where Sultan Qaboos bin Said meets with his official visitors and ministers. Painted an eye-catching turquoise blue and gold, and nestled between steep rocky hills, Al Alam faces picturesque Muscat Bay, and is flanked by the medieval fortresses Al Mirani and Al Jalali (Photo Stop).

Founded in 1971 by the founding President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayid bin Sultan Al Nahyan, this ambitious visionary project is located on a natural island that has been occupied for centuries. There are over 40 archaeological sites on the island. One of the oldest is a Nestorian Christian monastery dating from 600 AD. Today Sir Bani Yas is a huge ecological experiment that explores “greening the desert” by re-introducing native and endangered species of Arabian flora and fauna. Over half the island is dedicated to the Arabian Wildlife Park. The island is a popular resort, where visitors indulge in active land and water sports and walk or drive to view the over 13,000 rare, free-roaming wild animals.
