Day 1: Longyearbyen | Embark

Enjoy a guided group tour of Longyearbyen, Svalbard's capital, before boarding the Greg Mortimer to sail north

Day 2-6: North West Svalbard

Explore the northwest's glorious Magdalenefjorden, whaling history of Smerrenburg, guillemots and walrus in Hamiltonbukta and much more.

Day 7-8: North East Svalbard

  • Ship

Along the northeast coast of Spitsbergen you enter a different world – a polar desert. If ice conditions allow, you will pass south through the narrow Hinlopen Strait. Between the islands of Barentsøya and Edgeøya, cross a major polar bear migration route and the beautiful fertile plains of Sundeneset.

Day 9-10: Barents Sea

Enjoy a series of entertaining and informative on board lectures as you cross the Barents Sea, cruising north towards Franz Josef Land.

Day 10-12: Kirkenes

Stop in Kirkenes then sail to neighboring Murmansk, Russia, for clearance before setting off on your adventures to Franz Josef Land.

Day 13-21: Franz Josef Land

From mysterious Bell Island to majestic Champ Island, explore the central-most of the 191 islands in the archipelago. Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife sightings including the elusive bowhead whale and the Arctic's top predator, the polar bear. Discover new landings as you make your way west to Prince George Land and Alexandra Land. Cliff around the islands host massive nesting colonies of seabirds such as guillemots, dovekies, and kittiwakes. 85% of the archipelago is dominated by gigantic tidewater glaciers and towering icebergs.

Day 22-24: Barents Sea

On leaving Franz Josef Land, crossing the Barents Sea is again an opportunity to see whales (possibly the elusive bowhead whale) and large numbers of seabirds. From Murmansk sail overnight to Kirkenes, Norway, (approx. 12 hours).

Day 25: Kirkenes | Disembark

  • 1 Breakfast
Disembark this morning after breakfast, transfer to the airport for homeward flights or onward journeys.
