Moderately active but not overly strenuous. This level includes activities like casual cycling, yoga, or excursions/activities that typically last 3-5 hours total each day.
Depart from Quito and travel to Shell. From there fly across the rainforest to the local Achuar community. Take a beautiful canoe ride to the Kapawi Amazon Lodge with your Kapawi guides.
In the afternoon you can walk along one of the Pastaza River beaches. Here, your guides will give guests an orientation session with information about the rainforest and the Achuar culture, while enjoying a beautiful sunset.
Depending on the weather, you will have the opportunity to partake in daily excursions in groups of 4 or more. Here is a sample of what a day in the Amazon might entail:
There are a few options for early morning excursions. You can take a 30 minute motor boat ride with your guides to reach one of the best natural attractions, the Claylick, where you will see different species of parrots and macaws such as the Colbalt-Winged Parakeet, Chestnut-Fronted Macaw, and Yellow Crowned Amazon. You also have the opportunity to find and spot the great variety of birds that the southeast Rainforest of Ecuador offers like the Hoatzin, Anhinga, Speckled Chachalaca, White Eared Jacamar, Cocoi Heron, Neotropical Cormorant, and the Great Egret. There are also chances to go birdwatching up the Kapawari River and to go to the Claylick again.
After breakfast you can take a 2 hour walk with stops to learn about the medicinal plants of the area and tropical forest ecology. You can also take a walk to learn about the benefits and uses of the palms to the Achuar and the important ecological role played by insects and animals in the forest. Another excursion includes your guides escorting you along the Pitzacocha trail and Lagoon. During this time you can learn about the forest and its benefits for the Achuar native people. You will have the chance to see a community and its members and purchase some traditional handicrafts.
After lunch there is time to rest and then you will be able to explore, via kayak, the Kapawari River and its connecting lagoons, while looking at the local wildlife such as the pink river dolphin. The river is quite calm, so swimming is completely safe. Take another afternoon to fish for piranha or catfish or partake in cultural activities like legends in hammock house and traditional greetings around a campfire. You will be able to learn the art of Achuar face painting and how it relates to their different activities. Another option includes having a picnic in the forest. You will then be able to go to the Achuar community.
After dinner you can partake in a spectacular night walk, observing the many different kinds of insects and amphibians that are found around the hotel. Take another night to explore the Kapawari River in search of nocturnal animals such as monkeys, alligators and birds.
Day 5: Depart from Kapawi Lodge | Return to Quito
1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch
Early in the morning your guides will bring you to specific points near the hotel in order to locate various species of birds. After breakfast prepare for departure. Before you depart from the Achuar territory, you can participate in a blowgun contest to demonstrate who is the best hunter.

This was my first experience with Adventure Life - and I couldn't have been more pleased with the trip. The guides and local staff in both Buenos Aires and Uruguay were terrific - extremely helpful and accommodating. I really enjoyed meeting the friendly staff in Buenos Aires in person (I left my bags with them for the afternoon).

The trip was not only memorable for the amount of animals we saw but also for the people and accommodations at the two camps where we stayed. Our first guide, BK, was a wealth of information about the animals, landscape and down to the plants and what they were used for. Everyday out was a learning experience with him. All the people at the camps were gracious and the food was excellent.
Our second camp in the Okavanga was just as good as the first as far as the staff, accommodations, food and animals. After our experience at the first camp we amazed that the high quality remained the same. Our guide, G, made sure we were able to enjoy every experience including a rush through the bush to witness a cheetah and an ensuing hunt that he heard over his radio.
In both camps there were enough guides out that if they saw something the other guides were informed which helped in seeing as much as possible. It was also nice that the concessions were large enough that we did not have vehicles following each other throughout the day.
Normally there is always something in a trip of this length that we think could be improved upon but this is the rare case where we cannot think of anything. From the time we left the States to when we returned it was one of the most hassle free vacations we took.
Perhaps emphasizing the use of the laundry facilities at the camps would be useful because of the luggage restrictions would be the only thing I can think of as an improvement to future clients.
