Beth and I share an adventurous spirit, we are fond of new places, experiences and mixing up the ordinary. We have had the the delight of sharing the world with our friends and family for the past 20 years. In total we have traveled to Baja, Cozumel, Greece, Patagonia, Costa Rica, Machu Picchu, Antarctica and the Galapagos with travel companion combinations varying between our children, friends and parents.
Traveling has always been a delight and a challenge.
Yet, with all the adventures we have been on it has been 16 years since we were able to explore as a couple. Several years ago we were planning a trip to Europe which was unfortunately called off because of the COVID pandemic. It took another couple years to get back on track and start planning again.
We get to celebrate a couple of milestones around this trip. The first was my 21 year anniversary working at Adventure Life. The second was our 25th wedding anniversary. Being young parents when we were first married our travel opportunities were quite limited, so this was our long awaited honeymoon.
It is a bit of a journey for us to get from Missoula to Athens. There was a seven hour layover before our 10 hour international flight, in all we were traveling for 23 hours. Our hotel was 20 miles outside of Athens right on the Mediterranean coast. We called ahead and asked the hotel to arrange for a taxi to pick us up from the airport. This first night we were plenty happy to have a simple meal and try to kick the jet lag.
Athens was a quick couple days.
The Parthenon was a priority, so the first day we made the trek into Athens. We took a local bus and subway into the city and arrived in the midday heat. In the city we could easily see the Parthenon ascend from its encasement of buildings and streets. A quick walk brought us to the base of the hill, but the entrance was a mystery - fortunately, there were only 2 possible directions to travel. We walked a narrow winding path with other travelers searching for the entrance. We entered the ruins I learned about in my college art history class and they were truly spectacular. I expected more visitor congestion, but it was easy to navigate the site. The view of the city shared some of the splendor we found in the history of the Acropolis.
It was time to refuel our bodies after we had our fill of ruins. With a short walk to the base of the hill we were greeted by many restaurant choices. A well shaded cafe with a fresh Greek salad and serving of tzatziki were an absolute must.
Using the public transit to find our way back to our hotel was more challenging. We were able to take the subway, but finding the right bus was guess work. We hopped on a bus and with some luck a local couple were kind enough to help us verify that were mostly going in the right direction. We exited the bus at its final destination which was 2 kilometers from our hotel, not too bad. We don’t mind a little hike, so we took off through some hillside neighborhoods with beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea. When we arrived to the hotel we knew a cool dip in the pool would do us good, unfortunately it closed early for some maintenance - well, to the shower.
We enjoyed our hike through the neighborhood so much we decided on another expedition the following day. We didn’t get far from our hotel when rain began to fall. With a quick dash back to the hotel we managed to only get damp. After the rain passed the sky gifted us a rainbow over the sea and the hotel pool called to us - I needed to practice my freestyle before our weeklong swim trip in Lefkada.
Kassandra prepared an organized agenda that was well designed based on our interests and feedback. She spent ample time discussing the agenda and answering any questions.

Really enjoyed Thatch Caye. The staff was great. Really liked our guide Raffi. And snorkeling at night was wonderful.

The persons I spoke with knew the material. I wont know until I actually take the trip if it was all correct but at this point they were helpful in finding a trip that met my criteria

Creating a checklist was very beneficial and meeting objectives on certain dates helped as well (to keep my trip organized). The Adventure Travel personnel helped keep me on track which is why my trip was so successful. Communication from both travel agencies (AT/MT) was vital.

This is an amazing company to work with. I generally do not use tour companies as I am more of an independent traveller so I was slightly reticent. They were fantastic from the start - 10/10 - from lining up a phone call to discuss requirements, then their ongoing communication in the lead up to the tour and during it (thank you, Franny and Phen). They also explored cost-effective options (eg group transfers). The tour was in Patagonia so Adventure Life organised a pickup from the El Calafate airport to the El Chalten accommodation, two day hikes with a private guide and then to the El Calafate accommodation. A tour coordinator came to the hotel to explain, using the maps, what was involved in each day tour and what should be expected, and patiently answered all questions. The tour guide Marcos was excellent - very professional, knowledgable, communicative and at all times felt very safe with his navigational skills (important in the Patagonian wilderness). On the second day I forgot to take hiking poles so Marcos kindly gave me his. I honestly wouldn't have changed a thing and would happily recommend and book through them again.
