The Theory

There are a lot of different ships in the Galapagos.  It seems that every year, a few new ships are built while a few older ones retire.  The Theory is among the new ships, but her operator is my single favorite.  Over the years, Ecoventura has operated the Eric, Letty, Flamingo, Galapagos Sky, Origin and Theory.  All but the Eric and Flamingo are still in operation, having been retired while a new mid-range fleet is built.

The Origin&Theory are both luxury yachts affiliated with Relais & Chateaux.  They each carry 20 passengers.  This is an important quality as Galapagos National Park rules stipulate that the maximum ratio is 16 passengers to 1 guide.  For this reason, most small vessels carry 16 passengers.  Since the Origin&Theory carry 20 people, that means there are 2 guides on board and the passenger to guide ratio is 10 to 1 instead of 16 to 1.  Smaller groups mean better quality guiding and more flexibility.

The Theory has an airy, modern feel to it.  The color scheme is neutral, grays and muted blues.  All of the amenities you'd expect from a luxury vessel are present.  The bar is well stocked and drinks are incuded in the cruise fare.  The food is very good - much better than what I've experienced previously in the Galapagos.  There is a lot of excellent, fresh seafood every day: from grouper, to mahi mahi, lobster, prawns, ceviche, calamari, and tuna.  We eat most meals in the restaurant, but are treated to a few lunches and dinners on the sundeck, which is divine.
