Day 1: Arrive Reykjavik

Arrive in Keflavik today where you transfer yourself to your Reykjavik hotel and settle in for the evening. If time allows, set out to explore this quaint 'large town' and rest up from your long journey.

Day 2: Grændalur | Skógafoss | Reynisfjara

  • Hotel
  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
Set out from Reykjavik this morning towards the south coast. Stop first at Hveragerði village to hike at Grændalur, a stunning geothermal area with boiling mud pools and numerous hot springs. Continue east past small villages in the country and beautiful waterfalls. Stop at Skógafoss Waterfall briefly to get out and take some pictures. Next visit the black-sand beaches of Reynisfjara and see the beauty and power of the Atlantic Ocean waves crashing in. Here you can spot basalt formations jutting out of the ocean. Continue on to your guesthouse for the evening near the town of Kirkjubæjarklaustur.

Drive Time: 4-5 hours
Walk Time: 2-3 hours

Day 3: Jökulsárlón | Skaftafell | Glacier Walk

  • Hotel
  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
Set out today further east to the popular Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. This lake forms at the base of the Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier, one of Vatanjokull ice cap's glacial tongues, and is dotted with blue icebergs that break off. The lagoon is an eerie and mysterious-looking backdrop that has been used as a setting in many movies. Early this afternoon you turn around and head back west, stopping at Skaftafell National Park off the Ring Road. The hiking trails in this part of the larger Vatnajökull National Park are some of the most popular in the country. Vatnajökull is the largest glacier in Europe and creates a stunning landscape in this region. In winter, Skaftafell is covered in snow, but in fall and spring you can see how green and colorful this particular oasis can be. An optional glacier walk on the Svínafellsjökull Glacier is possible here before you return to your guesthouse this evening.

Drive Time: 2-2.5 hours
Walk Time: 4-5 hours/2-3 hours in winter

Day 4: Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon | Seljalandsfoss | Vík

  • Hotel
  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
This morning continue west, stopping first for a gorgeous walk at the Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon. Drive further west over sandy plains and lava fields before you arrive to the town of Vik. Take a short walk here on the black beaches. The high cliffs dominate the scenery. Legend has it that trolls once lived here and turned to stone! Continue your drive to Eyjafjallajökull Volcano, the one whose large eruption in 2010 caused air traffic to stop in Europe for almost a week. Stop here to visit the new Eruption Center at Þorvaldseyri farm. Watch a short documentary about the eruption. Depending on the weather conditions, you may head inland towards Þórsmörk, another hiking oasis tucked in between three glaciers. If possible you can make your way to the Gígjökull Glacier and get out to explore the area. Drive the rest of the way to Fljótshlíð where you overnight in a guesthouse.

Drive Time: 4 hours
Walk Time: 2-3 hours

Gullfoss is a large display of raw power, and is considered one of the most beautiful Icelandic waterfalls. In two giant steps the flow of the Hvítá River drops 32 m into a deep canyon. Visit also Geysir, the hot spring after which the word 'geyser' was originally derived in the English language today. Visit also nearby Strokkur geyser, which erupts up to 30 m every 5-10 minutes. Continue on to Laugavatn where you spend the night in a guesthouse located in a beautiful historic building that once served as a school.

Walk Time: 2-3 hours

Day 6: Þingvellir | Borgarfjörður | Snæfellsnes

  • Hotel
  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner

This park is the original site of the oldest Parliament in Europe and is considered the 'birthplace' of democracy in Iceland. The park is now a UNESCO World Heritage site and is one of only two places in the world where tectonic plate divergence can be observed above the Earth's surface. After exploring Thingvellir, continue west to the Borgarfjörður region along the west coast. This is the home of Deildartunguhver, the most powerful hot spring in Iceland. Visit here as well the unusual phenomenon of Hraunfossar, which is a row of waterfalls whose water protrudes from underneath a lava field out the side of the cliff. The popular Barnafoss can also be observed here. At the end of the day, make your way out to Snæfellsnes Peninsula which stretches out to the west and is divided by a high chain of mountains. Arrive to your guesthouse and settle in.
