Camp Sossus is a semi-permanent tented camp in the Greater Sossusvlei-Namib area of Namibia's vast Neuhof Nature Reserve. Nestled between the Nubib and Zaris Mountains, this camp is just a thirty minutes' drive from the Sossusvlei Gate and the Namib Sand Sea, which recently received the designation as a World Heritage Site. The camp is only available on an exclusive basis, promising adventurous travelers a completely unique and off-the-beaten-path experience.
Camp Sossus offers travelers a return to the wild with an authentic, back-to-the-basics safari experience that re-defines luxury. The focus here is not on creature comforts, but rather on raw, natural experiences that occur within one of Africa's most wild places.
Sossus Under Canvas has eight Meru tents, including two family tents. The camp is comfortable but rustic, with a focus on the wilderness and expert guiding. Designed to protect the camp from the wind, the buildings have stonewalls on the eastern side, with roofs built from recycled oil drums and recycled wood and metal used on the interiors too. From the distance the camp is nearly invisible, having been designed to blend in with its environment. Inside the camp is a central lounge and dining area with a fireplace where guests can gather together at the end of the day. The camp is only available for booking on an exclusive basis and is open from April to November.
Amenities:
• 8 shaded large square Meru tents (4m x 4m and 3m high)
• En suite open-air bathrooms with hot bucket showers and flush toilet
Solar lighting
• Central dining, lounge and common areas
• Exclusive use of the camp
Star Beds
Built on a deck above the bathroom at each guest tent and supplied with their own linen so there is no need to take the bed linen from inside the tents. Namibia’s night sky is famous for its stars, so why would anyone not want to spend at least one night under the stars in complete safety and privacy using these Star Beds which are unrivaled in the Namib Desert. This allows for nights under a billion stars, ensuring crisp, cozy bedding, good lighting as required, as well as what most find to be a very romantic night under the stars!

The trip was not only memorable for the amount of animals we saw but also for the people and accommodations at the two camps where we stayed. Our first guide, BK, was a wealth of information about the animals, landscape and down to the plants and what they were used for. Everyday out was a learning experience with him. All the people at the camps were gracious and the food was excellent.
Our second camp in the Okavanga was just as good as the first as far as the staff, accommodations, food and animals. After our experience at the first camp we amazed that the high quality remained the same. Our guide, G, made sure we were able to enjoy every experience including a rush through the bush to witness a cheetah and an ensuing hunt that he heard over his radio.
In both camps there were enough guides out that if they saw something the other guides were informed which helped in seeing as much as possible. It was also nice that the concessions were large enough that we did not have vehicles following each other throughout the day.
Normally there is always something in a trip of this length that we think could be improved upon but this is the rare case where we cannot think of anything. From the time we left the States to when we returned it was one of the most hassle free vacations we took.
Perhaps emphasizing the use of the laundry facilities at the camps would be useful because of the luggage restrictions would be the only thing I can think of as an improvement to future clients.
