Located in the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is a pear-shaped island with a total length of 438 km and a width of 225 km. Nearly 645 kilometers (400 miles) north of the Equator, Sri Lanka is surrounded by the Gulf of Mannar and the Palk Strait, which separate it from India.
