Day 1: Copenhagen, Denmark | Embark

  • 1 Dinner
Embark on your cruise in Denmark's capital, Copenhagen, arguably one of the world's best-loved cities. The liveliest of all the Scandinavian capitals is a gracious and comfortable place, with a decidedly friendly, hospitable and fun-loving atmosphere. If there is such a thing as a cozy city, Copenhagen is it. From the lingering memory of the tales of Hans Christian Andersen to the colored lights of Tivoli Gardens, there is a delightful ambiance that surrounds the visitor everywhere. Tidy, narrow streets are lined with tempting restaurants and cafes, and the pedestrian-only Stroget abounds with stylish shops. The spirited Copenhageners are imaginative and unconventional and exude a "do-what-you-want" philosophy that embraces and respects almost all aspects of life. Every friendly Dane you meet further illustrates the city's motto "Wonderful, wonderful, Copenhagen."

Day 2: Aalborg, Denmark

  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
The waterway known as Limfjord separates the northern tip of Denmark’s Jutland from the rest of the peninsula. At its narrowest strait, Vikings created a settlement in about 700 AD. Sailing into Aalborg today, you will see one of Europe’s most modern and attractive waterfronts. Striking contemporary landmarks such as the Utzon Center are balanced by repurposed structures like the vintage power station housing the Nordkraft cultural center. Built in 2008, the Utzon Center is the work of Joern Utzon, the architect who designed Sydney’s iconic Opera House. This contrast is repeated throughout the town, with Renaissance landmarks such as the Jens Bang’s House and Aalborg Castle juxtaposed against the ultra-modern House of Music and the newly renovated modern art museum Kunstet. The waterfront attracts visitors with pleasant parks and playgrounds including the Jomfru Ane Park and the Havnebad swimming center. At the Springeren Maritime Experience Center, you can tour an actual Danish submarine and a high-powered torpedo boat displayed on dry land, or take the virtual wheel on a navigation simulator. Nearby attractions include the sandspit at the upper end of Denmark at Skagen, the picturesque market town of Nide and Voergaard Castle. A fitting climax to your day in Aalborg might include a visit to the Danish Distilleries, established in 1881, which manufactures 16 varieties of the potent, herbal-scented spirits called aquavit. Skaal!

Day 3: Kristiansand, Norway

  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
Today enjoy the colorful yellow, red and white houses of Kristiansand cluster around the town's 17th-century Gothic cathedral. This South Coast town, situated on an estuary of the Otra River, was founded in 1641 by Christian IV, King of Denmark and Norway. The picturesque Old Town, called "Kvadraturen" in Norwegian, is known for its right-angled street plan, inspired by Renaissance classicism. Much of the town was destroyed during the intense bombing of WWII, and reconstructed in the vibrant colors you see today.

Day 4-5: Rosendal | Ulvik | Eidfjord, Norway

  • 2 Breakfasts, 2 Lunches, 2 Dinners
The charming village of Ulvik is nestled deep in fjord country, in the northern reaches of the mighty Hardangerfjord. Eidfjord was built on sand and gravel moraines that remained from the last Ice Age. Today, Eidfjord is a gateway to Hardangervidda, Norway's largest national park, and a hiker's paradise. Waterfalls such as the Voeringsfoss, which tumble 600 feet to the floor of the Maaboedal Valley, are also a prime attraction. The River Eid offers good trout and salmon fishing amid some of Norway's most magnificent scenery.

Day 6: Bergen, Norway

  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
With its mountain backdrop and painted wooden houses, Norway's second-largest city is one of the country's most appealing places. In the 14th century, the port of Bergen was a Hanseatic trading center and for a time, the country's capital. The buildings on Bryggen, as the Hanseatic Wharf is called, are collectively a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site. The harbor-side market, the lovely parks, and the shopping district are all best suited to explore on foot. Take a ride on a funicular up to the 1,050-foot-high Floeien lookout, or head to 13th-century Bergenhus Fortress and 16th-century Rosenkrantz Tower to feel transported back in time.

Day 7: Skjolden, Norway

  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
At the head of Sognefjord, Norway’s longest at 120 miles, lies a charming village surrounded by the Jotunheimen National Park, home to Norway’s tallest peaks, the dramatic Feigumflossen waterfall, and Jostedalsbreen, a cluster of dramatic glaciers. Nearby, visit the 12th-century Urnes Stave Church, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a splendid example of the Norwegian genius for woodworking. Scenic cruising of Lustrafjord and Sognefjord add grandeur to both your approach and your departure, bathed in the lingering daylight of the northern summer.

Day 8: At Sea

  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
Enjoy a day at sea while keeping yourself occupied with all that the Seabourn Quest has to offer. Work out in your ship's well-equipped fitness center, with cardio and resistance equipment. Strengthen your core with complimentary Pilates and yoga classes, or book a private session with a personal trainer. Expand your horizons in the library, at a port lecture or at one of the many inspiring enrichment programs. Enjoy a massage on deck. Indulge your need for pampering at the spa, or pamper your palate at a food or wine tasting.

Day 9-10: Runavik, Faroe Islands & Lerwick, Shetland Islands, United Kingdom

  • 2 Breakfasts, 2 Lunches, 2 Dinners
Spend a day exploring the area around Runavik, Faroe Islands. There are a host of optional add-on land excursions before making your way to the Shetland Islands. Perhaps best known to most of the world for their shaggy ponies, the Shetland Islands offer magnificent seascapes, good trout fishing, and prime bird watching. Local handicraft specialties such as polished stones, traditional silver craft, seal skin furs and distinctive hand-knit sweaters are displayed temptingly in local shops. Of the approximately 100 islands in the group, twelve are developed with permanent residents, and the largest is named Mainland. In this remote area of the North Sea, the lilting speech of the Islanders may prove a bit difficult to understand at first, but their warm-hearted hospitality is easily grasped.

Day 11: Kirkwall, Scotland, United Kingdom

  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
Six miles of turbulent waters known as the Pentland Firth separate the northeastern corner of Scotland from Orkney. This archipelago comprised of some 70 islands, only 28 inhabited by humans, was first settled by the Vikings in the 9th century. Ruled by Norway and Denmark until 1468, the islands were given to Scotland by a Norwegian King in lieu of a dowry for his daughter's marriage to James III. Kirkwall is the capital city, located on Mainland, the Orkney's largest island. Explore this fascinating town with its steep-roofed houses and medieval St. Magnus Cathedral, or venture further out of town to see some of the wealth of prehistoric sites, which dot the island. Although politically a part of Great Britain, the archipelago retains a strong sense of Norse traditions as evidenced by the architecture and crafts found here.

Day 12: Ullapool, Scotland, United Kingdom

  • 1 Breakfast, 1 Lunch, 1 Dinner
Although not large by some standards, Ullapool is among largest communities in the Scottish Highlands. The neat white buildings that make up its waterfront face onto a shingle beach and scatter up the slopes behind. The Wester Ross region is famous for its majestic mountains and picturesque villages. Knockan Crag in nearby Achiltibue has an informative interpretive site showing the looming Moine Thrust that proved to be an important milestone in geologist’s understanding of plate tectonics. The mile-long, 200-foot deep Corrieshalloch Gorge can be viewed from a breathtaking suspension bridge or an overlook. Slightly further afield are the dramatic pinnacles of Stac Pollaidh and the sea cliffs at Rhue lighthouse. In Ullapool, you might explore the town museum or the community gallery An Talla Solais.

Day 13: At Sea

Day 14-15: Newcastle upon Tyne | Great Yarmouth, England, United Kingdom

  • 2 Breakfasts, 2 Lunches, 2 Dinners
Newcastle is so linked to its life source, the River Tyne, that its proper name is 'Newcastle upon Tyne.' Originally the site of a small fort and bridge on Hadrian's Wall, the town grew in importance when the Normans built a new castle (hence the name) here in 1080 to serve as a base for their lengthy battles with the Scots to the North. When coal became a universally useful commodity in the 13th century, the seaport grew up around the town to expedite the shipment of the valuable product. No less than six major bridges overshadow the waterfront, including the oldest, the High Level, built in 1849 by Robert Stephenson. The unusual Swing Bridge was designed by Lord Armstrong and dates back to 1876. Not surprisingly, shipbuilding and industry remain the economic base for the region.

Day 16: Dover (London), England, UK | Disembark

  • 1 Breakfast
As Britain's historic gateway to Europe, Dover and its famous white chalk cliffs have been the last glimpse of England seen by many a sea traveler over the centuries. When the Romans arrived, they erected a lighthouse to mark the coastline. One of the mightiest medieval castles built in Europe still stands atop those cliffs. Utilized by the British High Command to direct the evacuation from Dunkirk in 1940, the tunnels remained a military secret until recently. Dover is a convenient starting point for touring England's scenic southeastern region.
