Day 1 Arrive San Jose
Arrive to the airport and take a taxi to your hotel for the first evening.
Days 2-3 Arenal Volcano
This morning your Toyota Rav 4 will be delivered to your hotel, complete with insurance coverage and maps to help you find your way. Load up and head off to Arenal. This active volcano exploded in a massive eruption of molten lava and ash in 1968. Since that time, it has continued to belch great clouds of ash and occasional lava. It is now one of the world's most active volcanoes and volcanologists from all over the world come here to study this tropical volcano. You'll spend the night at Lomas del Volcan, offering individual rustic cabins with beautiful views of the volacano. You are very near to many activity options in town as well. In this area you can go mountain biking, fishing, horseback riding or even take a hike or horseback ride to visit La Fortuna Waterfall. You can also visit any number of hot springs in the area. The drive to Arenal takes a few hours, but you can take a minor detour too and visit the famous Waterfall Gardens for lunch.
Days 4-5 Monteverde Cloud Forest
Today you leave to drive around Costa Rica's Lake Arenal to the Monteverde Cloudforest Reserve, one of the richest and most diverse tropical cloudforests on the continent. Founded in 1972, the Reserve encompasses six different ecological life zones and protects more than 100 mammal species, 400 bird species, and upwards of 1,500 plant species. In your explorations, keep watch for one of the area's most famed residents, the Resplendant Quetzal. In this area, you can arrange a number of activites to explore the area. You can take a guided hike through the Cloudforest reserve, viewing the misty forest with its dense vegetation and majestic trees. Other activites include arranging night hikes, horseback rides, visiting the cheese factory (which boasts some of the best ice cream in the country) or the frog or snake sanctuary. For the more adventurous, you can arrange to take one of the fantastic canopy zipline tours available. Fly from platform to platform high above the ground and try a spectacular rope ladder climb through the inside of a huge, hollow strangler fig. For the less adventurous, there's also nearby sky walk suspended in the canopy that's great for birding and learning more about the local ecology.
Days 6-7 Manuel Antonio
Today you will head out on your way to Manuel Antonio, a 4 to 5 hour drive. On your way, you can stop at the Rio Tarcoles bridge to observe the many crocodiles basking in the sun beside the river's edge. You will settle into your hotel located near the beaches in Manuel Antonio, as well as walking distance away from the National
Park entrance. The Park boasts lush vegetation alive with 109 species of mammal and over 184 species of birds. Much of the wildlife is very use to human presence, so you will have a great chance of seeing white faced monkeys, sloths, agoutis, and other wildlife during a venture through the Park. In this area, you can also arrange whitewater rafting on the Naranjo or Savegre rivers, dolphin or whale watching tours, mangrove wildlife tours, or diving and fishing trips. You can also try your hand at surfing or boogie boarding, or just relax in the sun along one of the many tan sand beaches.
Day 8 Return San Jose
Spend your last moments enjoying the coastal life, and then drive yourself back to San Jose this evening where you will overnight at your hotel. Arrive before 5 PM in order to drop off your vehicle before offices are closed and arrange a taxi back to your hotel for the evening.
Day 9 Return Home
Arrange a taxi to return to the airport in time to catch your flight home.
