It is common for guidebooks to speak of the rich and varied history of the Mediterranean and the layers upon layers of civilizations whose remains are preserved here. Discover this history on your 8-day voyage. Begin in Pompeii, the preserved city that captures life in the ancient Roman Empire perhaps better than any other site in the world. Call at the medieval town of Erice to visit the ancient Greek site of Segesta and the breathtaking 12th-century Venus Castle, precariously perched along a steep and verdant hillside. On Corsica, visit the picturesque town of Bonifacio whose Gothic architecture sits on tall, white limestone cliffs in contrast with the dark turquoise sea. Conclude with a visit to Villa dei Mulini, Napoleon Bonaparte’s home, and to Pisa, with its magnificent Cathedral and the Leaning Tower. This Mediterranean cruise is sure to delight history lovers.

Day 1

Rome / Anzio

Arrive in Rome and transfer to Anzio to embark on the Arethusa.

Day 2

Sorrento / Pompeii

In the morning, visit Pompeii, the Roman city which was destroyed and preserved by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79. No other location so completely captures the life of the ancient Roman empire as this lost - and then found - city. Visit the Forum, Temples of Apollo and Jupiter, and the Stabian Baths, the best-preserved and most complete in Pompeii.

Day 3

Trapani / Erice / Segesta

Drive up winding roads to the medieval town of Erice. The town was known for its temple to the fertility goddess, Astarte. Look around the 12th-century Venus Castle and continue to Segesta for a visit to its magnificent Doric temple, built in 420 B.C.

Day 4

Explore this beautifully-situated hamlet, part of the town of Tortoli, and its environs, including the medieval Torre Spagnola.

Day 5

Bonifacio, France

Navigate the narrow waterway which leads to Bonifacio. Built on spectacular high cliffs on Corsica's south coast, Bonifacio is one of the Mediterranean's most notable landmarks. Stroll through the striking town and admire the Gothic architecture and dramatic scenery from its limestone cliffs which face the sea.

Day 6

Portoferraio, Italy

Drop anchor at Portoferraio, the main harbor of the island of Elba. Most famous for being the location of Napoleon Bonaparte's exile, visit the Villa dei Milini, Napoleon's home, which has excellently preserved several artifacts from the emperor.

Day 7

Viareggio / Lucca / Pisa

From the seaside resort of Vilreggio travel to Lucca, which houses one of the finest collections of Romanesque churches and medieval palaces in the region. In the afternoon, head to Pisa to visit the magnificent Cathedral, Baptistery, and Leaning Tower.
