Explore the Olympic wilderness and the San Juan islands on this 8-day active small ship expedition exploring coastal Washington. Highlights of your voyage include floating the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks; cruising Seattle's picturesque waterfront; kayaking, paddle boarding, and skiff exploration in glacial fjords and the San Juan archipelago; and hiking in the Olympic Mountains, Mt. Constitution, and Washington State Parks. You can also look forward to unhurried time for watching gray whales, orcas, seals, sea lions, eagles, and sea birds while your ship explores scenic winding channels, temperate rain forest, and old growth forest. You can also uncover Native cultures of the Pacific Northwest, spend time of your own for exploring quaint Friday Harbor, and enjoy hand-crafted cuisine including an oyster and clam tasting hosted by local growers.

Day 1

Seattle, Washington / Embark

Seattle was founded along the shores of Elliott Bay. Today, set sail from Fishermen's Terminal, transit the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, and cruise the city’s picturesque waterfront before dropping anchor in a tucked away bay to begin your Pacific Northwest cruise.

Day 2

  • Ship
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

South Hood Canal

Wake up in one of the quietest reaches of Puget Sound—Hood Canal, a glacial fjord separating the Olympic and Kitsap Peninsulas. You’ll be hiking in the Olympics today, surrounded by rainforest, old growth forest, and small quaint towns. Keep watch for resident bald eagles. A local family joins you onboard for a tasting of their home-grown oysters and clams.

Day 3

  • Ship
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Port Townsend

Make it an ideal morning by starting the day with an early soak in the on-deck hot tub or a paddle along shore at Marrowstone Island - or both! Learn the history of Puget Sound’s “Triangle of Fire” this afternoon before docking in historic Port Townsend, home to a wonderful art and pub scene. Here’s your chance to go for a run, explore this charming town, or shop like a wingnut.

Day 4

  • Ship
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Salish Sea / Deception Pass

The timing for today all depends on tides and currents, but the morning has you underway for bird watching, possibly around Protection Island—a federally protected National Wildlife Refuge and nesting site for tufted puffins and rhinoceros auklets. Cap off the day with afternoon hikes, shore walks, and kayaking near scenic Deception Pass.

Day 5

  • Ship
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Lopez Island / Friday Harbor

Today lands you in one of the most scenic areas of the San Juan Islands. The rocky outcroppings of Lopez Island play host to harbor seals, and it is orca whale territory. Keep your eyes peeled above and below the surface, whether you opt for kayaking or a chance to snorkel. Later you have time on your own to explore the intriguing whale museum, art galleries, and boutiques of charming Friday Harbor.

Day 6

  • Ship
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Orca's Island

Your Captain navigates through the islands this morning to your basecamp at Orcas Island. Prepare for a day of play where the options are unending. Choose a local favorite: hike Mt. Constitution. This is the highest peak in the San Juan Islands and it provides a stunning view of the archipelago. If you’re interested in skiff exploration or more paddling, the kayaks and paddle boards are up for grabs too.

Day 7

  • Ship
  • Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Sucia Island

For your final treat, enjoy the day anchored at picturesque Sucia Island — total population of four — a Washington State Marine Park filled with hidden coves and bays. Explore the intertidal zone with your expedition team, hike across the island, and kayak in a protected bay. Weather permitting, enjoy a barbeque on shore. This evening, wrap up your trip with a slide show highlighting your week’s adventures.
