Day 1 Ushuaia / Embark
Regarded as the world’s southern-most city, Ushuaia is the capital of Tierra del Fuego in the extreme South of Argentina at the end of Beagle Bay. This amazing little town of over 45,000 people is surrounded by mountains and fertile plains. The first inhabitants here were nomadic hunters and gatherers who arrived on foot to the Isla Grande over 10,000 years ago. Nature lovers will be bowled over by the Tierra del Fuego National Park and its amazing wealth of flora and fauna: beavers, albatrosses, guanacos, penguins... Here forests cover the slopes of the Andes mountains then give way to snow-capped peaks… a truly unique and unforgettable landscape.
Day 2 At Sea
Relax on board your ship as you embark for an exceptional journey with a team of passionate naturalists. Upcoming zodiac excursions to approach the unique wildlife in the majestic scenery of glaciers and tabular icebergs.
Explore your new home for the next couple of weeks while your ship cruises to the Falkland Islands.
Day 3 New Island / West Point, Falkland Islands
Not far from Cape Horn, located to the south east of South America, the Falkland Islands, which are renowned for their wildness, were discovered by a Spanish expedition at the beginning of the 16th century. More than two hundred years later, sailors from Saint-Malo, known as Malouins, occupied the island and gave it the name used until the British conquered these lands at the edge of the world in 1833. Scattered with tufts of grass, surrounded by a grey and often wild sea, the Islands are a small country of moors and rugged coastlines carved by the South Atlantic, where the wildlife and plant life form a link between Patagonia and Antarctica. Take the time to observe and photograph the abundant wildlife of these wild and very attractive islands.
Days 4-5 At Sea
Day 6 Salisbury Plain / Fortuna Bay, South Georgia
You will disembark at the splendid Fortuna site among the penguins and be allowed to approach the sea elephants lounging in the weak southern sunshine. his glacial expanse surrounded by high mountains is home to over 250,000 King penguins.
Day 7 Grytviken / St Andrews Bay, South Georgia
You will discover the first whaling station and the Grytviken museum which is home to the tomb of the famous navigator, Shackleton.
Day 8 Gold Harbour / Drygalski Fjord, South Georgia
Days 9-10 At Sea
Relax on board your luxurious ship while cruising towards the White Continent.
Day 11 Cruising in the Weddell Sea
A lengthy sail in the Weddell Sea will allow you to experience true silence, an extraordinary and enchanting atmosphere, unrivalled calm...You will discover a secret reserve of preserved treasure: Fur Seals, penguin colonies, Wandering Albatross and other giant Petrels. Here the huge icebergs and the endless ice cap sculpt a landscape beyond compare. The lord of the manor is known as the Weddell Seal. It is a record breaker, able to remain submerged for more than an hour. Its pelage is dark grey and it has a spotted belly. To maintain its access to the sea and be able to fish, the Weddell Seal has special teeth allowing it to make a hole in the thick ice.
Days 12-13 Antarctic Sound - Deception Island & the South Shetland Islands
Nestled at the heart of the South Shetland Islands, in the north of the Antarctic Peninsula, Deception Island is easy to recognise for its horseshoe shape. This island was once an active volcano whose crater collapsed some 10,000 years ago. This produced a caldera which was then flooded by the sea creating a natural port. Entrance to the port is via a narrow channel called Neptune’s Bellows. For a long time this was an important whaling port and the intensity of this activity has left traces that have withstood time.
On the black sand of the volcanic beaches, there are remains of abandoned huts that have been overrun by the extraordinary wildlife, part of the treasure that Nature offers there. It is on these beaches of ash that the largest colony of Chinstrap Penguins in the Antarctic Peninsula has taken up residence. Excursions aboard your zodiacs will allow you to set foot on this expanse of land where more than 100,000 pairs of penguins, Elephant Seals and Fur Seals live side by side.
Days 14-15 At Sea - Drake Passage
You will cross the notorious Drake Passage named after the famous explorer, Sir Frances Drake, who sailed in these waters way back in 1578.
