At the heart of Disko Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Ilulissat Icefjord provides an extraordinary spectacle of almost surreal beauty. The sculptural icebergs continue on their timeless journey, shimmering with their eternal light. Vast pieces of ice break off from the bergs and rejoin the inexorable movement of the sea. Close by lies the town of Ilulissat, the region’s principal destination. Encircled by icebergs, it has retained a unique mix of traditional Arctic life, with multi-colored wooden houses, huskies, and the leather tanners who still work today using the ancient methods of their ancestors.
* An additional optional evening cruise is available on day 2 of the cruise, as well as additional walking and Zodiac cruise tours around the ice fjords on day 3.
On day 2 cruise along the coast of Ilulissat with its colored houses, and then get to the open sea so as to reach the ice fjord of Ilullissat, called the Isfjord. Experience an unforgettable moment where the colors change with the inclination of the sun, which does not go down at this season in this area. The icebergs and the ice packs have golden, pink, red or mauve glints.
On day 3 choose between two optional excursions:
- Leave the wharf by bus and go through Ilulissat to the south. After a guided walk of about 45 minutes, reach the idyllic Sermermiut Valley. Then walk back to the bus to return to Ilulissat, the old city and the port. If you want, saunter in the city and pay homage to Knud Rasmussen, famous Danish explorer who was born in Ilulissat and whose childhood home became a museum.
- As the ship anchors, board small local boats directly from the ship. Cruise along the coast to discover Ilulissat and its colored houses, and then get to the open sea to reach the Isfjord. The small boats slide on the calm waters of Disko Bay by clearing their way between the small ice packs. At the end of this navigation among the ice, go back to the vessel.
