Only Solo for So Long...Galapagos Multisport
Sunset, San Cristobal
A solo adventurer to Quito & Galapagos finds a vibrant community of nature, wildlife & new friends
Finally, my long awaited trip to the Galapagos - check one off the bucket list! Though excited, 24 hours before, some anxiety builds - what was I thinking traipsing to South America by myself?! A solo adventure to Costa Rica a number of years - an impulsive internet booking to a surf camp for 1st time surf lessons - in the pre-smartphone era had …
The Bob Hope Road Show
A pooled city tour matches me up with Bob, an affable extremely well-traveled Pastor from MN. As we both are intent on practicing Spanish, we ask our guide Willie to conduct the entire tour in Spanish, which he does - and among our new vocabulary, I learn the lovely expression for popcorn - palomitos de maiz (which is often served at meals in …
And Then There were 7....
Though now thoroughly enthralled by my solo traveller status, I had to face joining a group of 3 pairs of strangers: (1) The Professors, (2) The Teachers, and (3) The Vet and her Mom. A very early morning start kept the intros and chatter to a minimum as we made our way to the Galapagos Island of San Cristobal. Greeted by Pablo, who turned out to …
The High and The Low
Sure, everyone needs a local guide to help spot the natural treasures hidden under leaves and branches, atop soaring mountains and volcanoes, and beneath lava rock and coral reefs. Indeed, the group (for some reason amused by Pablo's description of the resident species as endemic) was already getting adept at spotting the sally light foot crabs …
The Ship Set Sail....
All the makings of Gilligan's Island were present as we boarded a boat (some chock full of motion sickness pills) for a full day of snorkeling at Isla Lobos, Cerro Brujo and Leon Dormido (Kicker Rock). Thrilled that my striped wetsuit perfectly matched my purple pedicure, I was ready to dive right in!
As we traversed the water catching sight of …
Another early start to the day, as we quickly consumed another fresh Opuntia breakfast of eggs, juice, fruit, yogurt, plaintain pancakes of course, COFFEE! And said goodbye to Godo, who will forever be my tranquila hombre.
Taylor had previously called shot-gun for the co-pilot's seat for our puddle-jumper to Isabela and she assisted piloting the …
Handed over a stockpile of granola bars, power bars, and freeze-dried snacks (a vegetarian's survival kit in latin america) to the volcano hikers, and set off to walk through town. Navigating around the piles of Marina Iguanas lazily making their way to the beach as the hot sun rose threw up a couple of detours, but this is why I travel - for the …
Santa Cruz Pit-Stop
So much to see, so little time! Charles Darwin Research Station where we met Super-Diego (no viagra for him!), The Widows of Lonesome George, a mustard-yellow Land Iguana, and a banana-leaf chomping Galapagos Tortoise.
Next stop, Santa Cruz Highlands where we encounter HUMONGOUS Galapagos Tortoises and get to experience first-hand what it is …
The Penultimate Day
Is it water taxi-bus-boat-bus-plane-taxi? Or water taxi-boat-bus-boat...??? Whatever, a multiple transport day leading us back to Quito. Luckily, the weather was beautiful so while in transport mode, we still caught glimpses of Frigates, Herons, Iguanas and possibly a shark or dolphin in the water.
The goup says its' goodbyes at the airport. …
