Bartolome Island Facts and Highlights
The eerie landscapes and bright colors of Bartholomew give it an almost lunar impression. This is considered by many to be one of the most scenic spots in the Galapagos, most notably for Pinnacle Rock. This stone spire juts proudly into the air as part of a tuff cone and marks the colorful backdrop of greens, reds, oranges, and black. A staircase brings explorers to one of the most breathtaking panoramic vistas in the Galapagos. The hike is one of the more challenging common hikes in the Galapagos, rising nearly 1000 feet (300 meters) above the beach. But the spectacular view is undoubtedly worth it.
All across this moonlike landscape, you will see pioneer plants pushing their way relentlessly through the tough, hardened lava. Down at sea level, two beaches are connected by a trail. Snorkeling and swimming from the beach is spectacular, it is one of the best places on the planet to go snorkeling with penguins, in addition to rays, sharks, and a rainbow of tropical fish.
