Day 1: Longyearbyen | Embark

Longyearbyen sits in a valley along the Adventfjord, framed by rugged mountains and glaciers. With just 25 miles of road, this small Arctic town is divided into several districts, including the central area and Nybyen (New Town), home to post-war miners’ barracks now housing guesthouses, a restaurant, and a gallery—each offering scenic views of the iconic Hiorthfjellet mountain. Between excursions like summer dogsledding or a boat trip to the abandoned Russian settlement of Pyramiden, take time to explore the Svalbard Museum for a deeper understanding of the region’s history and environment.

Day 2: Ny-Alesund | Exploring Svalbard - Captain’s Choice

Ny-Alesund is the northernmost settlement on Svalbard, home to roughly a dozen residents and an international scientific research station. Nearby lies a vital breeding ground for rare geese and Arctic terns. A short cruise from the village brings you to the Ossian Sars Nature Reserve, where protected mountain landscapes and resilient Arctic vegetation create a striking natural tableau.

Even in one of the most isolated regions of the Arctic, there is still the captivating history of a pioneering past. Your expedition leaders, along with the captain and onboard pilot, will determine possible landings each day for all-out explorations. Wildlife abounds throughout the archipelago of Svalbard, such as puffins, reindeer, Arctic terns and foxes. An expert photographer will help you look out for the perfect photo opportunity of these animals, but especially for the elusive polar bear. As Zodiac cruises may bring you closer to glaciers, keep your eyes on the water for whale fins.

CAPTAIN’S CHOICE — Your Captain will expertly navigate ice floes, icebergs and changing sea and weather conditions to ensure you experience the most from your expedition. Each day is a new adventure filled with a spontaneous sense of exploration as your Captain works with your expedition team to determine possible shore landings and Zodiac safaris. All itinerary routes serve as examples and are subject to change based on current conditions, prioritizing the safety and optimal expedition experience for all guests.

This was my first experience with Adventure Life - and I couldn't have been more pleased with the trip. The guides and local staff in both Buenos Aires and Uruguay were terrific - extremely helpful and accommodating. I really enjoyed meeting the friendly staff in Buenos Aires in person (I left my bags with them for the afternoon).
