Wildlife of the Arctic

Polar bears, narwhals, belugas, caribou, walruses, wolves, and puffins are among the indigenous Artic wildlife.

Polar bears are found only in the Arctic, not in Antarctica. Polar bears prefer the north polar region because it has more snow and ice.

Travelers on an Arctic vacation can experience the world-famous wildlife of Greenland, Iceland, Canada, Norway, Finland, Russia, and the Scottish Isles. A tour to the Arctic may also include stops in the far-flung North Pole, Svalbard, or Norway's volcanic Jan Mayen island.

6 Best Alaska Wilderness Tours for 2025-2026

Alaska Wildlife Guide

Alaska's Wildlife

Wildlife in Alaska's wide and pristine environment is breathtaking. The majority of animals here are mammalian, adapted to Alaska's harsh winters by thick fur coats or fat layers. Glacier Bay National Park, the Inside Passage, and millions of acres of wildlife reserves and national parks are among Alaska's natural wonders.

Land mammals: grizzly and black bears, as well as the elusive polar bear (found only in the extreme north), as well as moose, caribou, and smaller furbearing animals such as marten, mink, wolves, and dawes sheep, are all sights to behold.

Marine mammals include humpback whales, orcas, beluga whales, bowhead whales, harbor seals, sea lions, sea otters, and walruses.

Bald and golden eagles are the most well-known birds, but there are also ptarmigans, loons, owls, swans, and puffins.

Five kinds of salmon thrive in these frigid northern seas, contributing significantly to the food chain.
